WA All-Class Boys Leaderboard - Oct. 10

With only one week of invitationals left before League meets start in, now is a good time to look at how Washington teams and athletes have fared so far this year. Expect changes even beginning next week, as several teams will run in their biggest invitationals of the year, especially at the Adidas Classic in Portland (many of the Southwest Washington teams plus Mead and Jackson will be in attendance) as it provides the rare chance to go against not only most of the best in Oregon, but also many of the best from Alaska and even teams from Texas and California.

But without further ado, here are the BOYS OVERALL LEADERBOARD for teams and individuals from around the state, based solely on SEASON BEST RESULTS THIS SEASON at MAJOR INVITATIONALS (and a few minor ones, to balance out representation). Note, this does not include subjective movement or head-to-head results or anything of the sort… just how their best marks this year compare to everyone else. Do not confuse these for my opinions on how the teams and individuals should be ranked – it more represents a good place for me to start, but I would take more factors into account for a true ranking (e.g., Patrick Gibson probably #1 in 2A boys, because he has been that good in the past and others haven’t yet run what he has before, even if he hasn’t done it yet this season as he looks towards state and post-state competition)

  1. Just wondering how Central Valley gets ranked ahead of Nathan Hale when Hale beat CV head-to-head at Richland? As a follower of GSL meets I do feel that CV is better than Hale but was surprised to see this in your rankings and was curious how you came to your conclusion. Thanks!

  2. Head to head team results aren't factored into calculating team scores. As mentioned at the top, this is all based on SEASON BEST results (for each athlete) and only from invitationals. Team scores are just the added scores from that individual list (constantly removing out teams until only 22 remain, or 16 for the class rankings).

  3. Thanks for clearing that up Rob. I guess I should've read the top of the page closer, lol. My bad. One last question as a newbie too your site, how do you come up with the individual's number/rating (and my bad if you also describe that somewhere and I missed it lol). Is there anything like a "perfect score" or something, like a 220?? Thanks.

  4. I once wrote up a good post about that on Dyestat, but... no idea where that post is now. But in short, it's similar to what Bill Meylan does for New York at Tullyrunners.com (main differences being he uses a +/- course adjustment system and focuses more on how the graph of Race A compares to graph of Race B and his "baseline" course, whereas I use a multiplier course adjustment system and focus more on how significant amounts of runners run at Course A and then Course B within a couple weeks -- accounting for week-to-week improvement for September/October meets).

There isn't really a "perfect score". For most cross country courses, each point is worth ~3 seconds... slightly more for slower courses, slightly less for faster courses... if a course is rated at 200.0 ~ 16:30, for example, each point would be worth 3.3 seconds, or at 14:00 it would be worth 2.8 seconds, etc.). And 200.0, in terms of something more standard, is about the equivalent of a 8:50ish 3200m on my scale.

  5. I suppose I could have just posted the equivalent Sun Willows (WA State) times so that people new to the idea could follow along a bit easier...
