WA Class 4A Leaderboard - Pre-State

(For more info on the rationale of these LEADERBOARDS, check out the All-Class Boys or Girls posts)

Note: For the team rankings, I didn’t limit it to what teams look to qualify; the information next to the team scores represent the teams’ position within their qualifying region/district compared to how many spots to state are available; times for individuals are included to better express what the ratings mean. Projected times are set to the Sun Willows 2008-2011 course average.

Notes#2: Cleaned out a few duplicate runners and corrected cases where two runners with the same name caused glitches in scoring. Also changed the script to represent where a team sits in its district, rather than rank district teams by their state score. Lastly, I also removed meets from before September 22 to keep these performances all within the last month while including all 2A-4A League/Conference meets from the last week that had full results on Athletic.net.

  1. Rob I would like to handicap the 4 different 4A regional courses in order to get an idea of how the individuals might finish. I know you know the 4 courses well! I was thinking of using the District 3/4 course in tacoma as the base (since they have the most berths) and handicap the other sites to tacoma's times (I may or may not convert the times I get to Sun Willows averages). My ballpark idea was to subtract 7 seconds from the Lakewood course times, add 15 seconds to richland and leave wenatchee alone (or add 5-10 seconds, this regional has me puzzled), (and like I said earlier leave tacoma alone). I think if I handicap it like this it should work. The key (I think) is to see how fast a particular course is on race day, not alltime. Any suggestions you have would be appreciated (and I know you do your rankings differently).

    1. Well, the differences I calculated was Lakewood + ~5.5 seconds, Richland + ~13.7 seconds, and Wenatchee + ~44.3 seconds (remember, it's 3 miles and was quite a bit faster than state last time they had a state qualifying meet there).

Athletic.net is a great resource for this if you want to use past races to compare, because you can set up a nice and easy table analyzing how each runner runs at each race. (feel free to email me if you want help doing something like that)

    2. re: meet @ Wenatchee - I wouldn't take much from this race, to be honest, because I'm pretty sure the teams were just running to qualify. With a small number of teams at the meet and only the winners going (+ the top 5 individuals), that probably effected how the race was run. So for Eisenhower (and the couple individual qualifiers), I'd probably look at how they did at their last major race - Sunfair - instead (which I have as being only a couple seconds faster than Lakewood)

    3. Thanks Rob. All that makes sense, including Wenatchee. And I most likely will email you this week like you generously invited. One question for clarification: are those times you quoted (~5, 13 and 44), are those times adjusted specifically for conditions on october 27, 2012 or is Lakewood historically 5.5 seconds faster than
      American Lake GC in tacoma?

    4. That's based on those races that day. I try to keep record of how major courses run, but only really keep close track of State Championship courses (for states that don't rotate courses) and the NXN Regional courses. And all that information is mostly geared towards making sure any adjustments I make would seem to be in line with what history would (roughly) suggest, because like you correctly point out weather (and sometimes general race flow, or slight inconsistencies in setting up the course) will effect how fast or slow races run.

  2. Note: It should read ADD 7 seconds to Lakewood times, not subtract.
