NXN-Heartland Results

Jake Leingang, a US Top-10 finisher at both FLN and NXN last year, claimed his first NXN-HL title and led his Bismarck ND team to victory in a tough field. It was a tight margin, as the Demon XC Club only finished 11 points ahead of runner-up Dowling Catholic IA (113), and the #3/4 teams of Edina MN (131) and Stillwater MN (135) were right behind. The girls race was a different story, as Wayzata MN ran away with the team title with 122 points. Eagan MN secured the second spot to nationals by scoring 206, with Dowling Catholic IA (217) and Arrowhead WI (227) not far behind. Individual qualifiers for the boys were Danny Aldaba (Fremont NE), Obsa Ali (Richfield MN), Eric Colvin (Stillwater MN), Ryan Kromer (Hudson WI), and Connor Olson (Wayzata MN). Girls individual qualifiers were Maria Hauger (Shakopee MN), Clare Flanagan (The Blake School MN), Stephanie Jenks (Linn-Mar IA), Bethany Hasz (Alexandria MN), and Alli Cash (Shawnee Mission West KS).

  1. Any thoughts on at larges after the first weekend?

  2. I haven't finished my thorough review yet, but my initial take on it...

New Trier IL girls are looking strong, but the biggest girls regions (NY, CA and SW in particular) are yet to race.

On the boys side, I think Summit has the best case, but an off race by their #1 at NXN-NW makes it questionable... seems like they are a team that should score about 300-310 points at NXN, but their regional race was about 50 points off of that... I don't think St. Xavier OH or Edina MN have been good enough to get in ahead of Summit, but that's just my opinion - I'm sure others who prefer to go more by who-beat-who-in-September will point towards St. Xavier beating Carmel at Culver as reason to put them ahead, even though the teams took different paths throughout the year (Carmel clearly ran their best race at IN State and NXN-Midwest, peaking very nicely, while St. Xavier hasn't seemed to run notably better than they did at Culver in mid September -- a quick and easy comparison, St. Xavier averaged 27 seconds slower at NXN-MW while the five other boys teams that competed at Culver that I could easily identify averaged only 12 seconds slower).

I think the At-Large picture will be a little more clear after the Southwest reigonal, but the real key is what happens the final week... California is always deep, the NY girls should get at least one spot, and you can't count out the NE or SE from making a splash either.
