NXN-Southwest Results

American Fork UT boys punches their ticket to Nationals by winning one of the toughest regions, the Southwest, with an astounding 36 points and another record-shattering team time of 76:11.795, lowering their own previous record by over 90 seconds. Finishing second was Davis UT with the #3 All-Time team time on the course and scoring 163 points, while Los Alamos NM and Herriman UT emerged as the #3/4 teams with 215 points and the #7 All-Time team time for Los Alamos while Herriman had the #5 All-Time team time.  Boys individuals qualifying for nationals were Bernie Montoya (Cibola AZ), Ben Saarel (Park City UT), Luis Martinez (Cleveland NM), Jordan Cross (Ogden UT) and Jake Heslington (Timpanogos UT).

On the girls side, Davis UT won the team race with 94 points and a new course record time of 90:28.690, breaking the record set earlier this year by Xavier Prep AZ at the Desert Twilight Festival. Also solidifying their spot in Portland was Fort Collins CO, scoring 104 points and running the #4 All-Time team time. Just as we’ve seen previously, this clearly wasn’t a two team region as Pine Creek CO nearly punched their own tickets as they finished with 107 points and the #3 All-Time team time. Fourth place went to Xavier Prep AZ with a score of 131 points and a team time just 17 seconds behind runner up Fort Collins. Once again, this appears to be one of the deepest – if not THE deepest – regions in the nation. The girls individual qualifiers were Elise Cranny (Niwot CO), Katie Rainsberger (Air Academy CO), Heather Bates (Pine Creek CO), Lucy Biles (Herriman UT) and Summer Harper (Orem UT). If third place Pine Creek CO is invited as an at-large team, the next individual qualifier would be eighth place finisher Emma Gee (Legacy CO).

  1. Definitely a strong region, especially on boys side. Last year boys' teams nabbed 3rd and 6th, top among regions. But on girls side, SW teams were 6th & 8th, very good, but behind NY of course (1, 2, 9) and MW (4th, 5th). How that shakes out this year won't be known until Dec 1

    1. I was speaking in terms beyond the top 2. Southwest girls have usually had among the better #3/4/5/6 teams, with California the only region close beyond the top 4 (though NY, of course, has been the strongest through 3).

  2. Jerrell Mock was tripped and fell down in NXN. I'm not sure whether others went down during that incident? Amazing performance given that. I didn't see it, just heard about it.
