(9/08) Sehome Invitational WA – NW#1/US#23 Glacier Peak WA girls looked like the top team, but WA#8 Sehome seemed close behind in the 2 mile class-flighted invitational. The meet also served as a 2A boys early-season preview with the top three teams all in attendance as well as four of the top six individuals. Highlight individual matchups included the boys senior race, where 2A defending champion and US#23 Patrick Gibson (Squalicum) ran 9:55.36 to hold off WA#7/2A#2 Poli Baltazar (9:57.67) of Aberdeen. In the girls senior race, it was Glacier Peak’s duo of US#11 Amy-Eloise Neale (10:54.93) and Katie Bianchini (11:31.27) leading four runners under 12 minutes.

(9/07) Run-a-Ree WA – NW#2/US#34 Camas girls got off to a start by winning a local meet 30-41 over WA#16 Union despite missing two of their top six returners. WA#14 Mark Tedder (Battle Ground senior) set the boys course record at 15:40 and WA#10 Colby Gilbert (Skyview senior) finished third in 16:23 with unranked Camas senior Andrew Kaler taking second in 16:11. Elsewhere around the Northwest, Elijah Armstrong and Haydin Herndon finished 1-2 to lead Pocatello to a win at the Tiger/Grizz Invitational in Idaho Falls, while the Bozeman girls held off several Idaho teams that might have finished closer than expected.  Wyoming’s Hailey Ricks (Star Valley) won individually for the girls over Presli Hutchison (Highland-Pocatello) and Caroline Hardin (Bozeman MT). Unfortunately, I don’t have decent rating estimates for this meet, but full results can be found at the idahoxc website.

Tracy Walters WA results

NW#1/US#4 North Central WA boys blitzed the field and had four in the top six at the very strong Tracy Walters Invitational. With the meet scoring 8 runners (with #9/10 runners displacing), North Central won the title with 80 points with US bubble teams Kamiakin WA (127) and Jesuit OR (199) rounding out the top three. WA#9 Central Valley (274) beat out both WA#7 Eisenhower (275) and WA#6/US Bubble Mt. Spokane (337), with unranked Coeur d’Alene ID (469) and Boise ID (485) rounding out the field.

The girls race saw Northwest bubble team Jesuit OR (105) and unranked St. Mary’s Academy OR (157) take out NW#5 Coeur d’Alene ID (161) with Boise ID (182) and Eisenhower WA (246) rounding out the field.

The girls individual race came down to a race for second, as US#4 Katie Knight (North Central) dominated the field running 17:47 while St. Mary’s Academy OR front duo of Paige Rice (18:38) and Ellen Patterson (18:48) battled with Boise sophomore Emily Hamlin (18:43) for second. Rice is also a pre-season US honorable mention individual.

The real story of the day was North Central junior Kai Wilmot (US#16) shattered the course record by running 14:44, and he is only the second runner to ever go under 15:00 at Audubon Park, a course tested by many of the best in Spokane over the past 20 years. The previous record was set by Andrew Gardner (Mead WA, this year’s US#5 pre-season individual) last year at 14:57, and the only other runners to have gone under 15:10 have been Nathan Weitz (Shadle Park WA 2011) at 15:00, Matt Davis (Mead WA 1993) at 15:01, and Anthony Armstrong (Kamiakin WA 2011) at 15:07. The runner-up in the race, WA#22 John Dressel (Mt. Spokane sophomore) crossed the line 47 seconds later at 15:31.

(8/31) Wilsonville Night Meet OR – Broken up by class races, the boys team featured some good individual performances but team performances weren’t necessarily as strong. Quick notes for the boys teams is that NW#4/US#24 Central Catholic OR had four in the top five in the Sophomore race, and three in the top five in the Freshman race, to go along with runner-up finishes by Dante Dalla Gasperina in the Junior race and Kyle Thompson in the Elite race. The girl’s side, however, featured some very strong team performances even though runners didn’t always run together. St. Mary’s Academy OR and NW bubble team Sunset OR look like they are going to be very good teams this year while Grant OR and Lincoln OR also showed promise.
