Great American NC & other SE Highlights - Oct. 1

Some good races down in North Carolina this weekend. There were three large meets, 2 of which seem important enough to mention here for one reason or another. The biggest by far, of course, was the Great American Festival, so I will start there.

  1. Crazy fast speed rating there. I'm a bit out of the loop and those kids were fast before but I never thought that fast.

    1. Yeah, they are pretty good! For background info:

Hasty is the defending NXN-SE Champion and was 7th at NXN Nationals last year. He didn't have THAT outstanding of a track season (9:01 for 3200m), but he might just be more of an XC guy.

Principe was 3rd at NXN-NE and 17th at NXN Nationals last year, ran 8:51 this spring, and broke the well-tested Bowdoin Park NY (NXN-NY/NE and NY Feds) course record.

It was a showdown of IMO two of the top 5 or 6 runners in the nation. Meylan had them #2 (Hasty) and #7 (Principe) in the pre-season; DyeStat had them at #3 (Principe) and #9 (Hasty) in their last update on Sep. 22; Milesplit was a little more down on them with Principe at #4 and Hasty at #12 back on Sep. 26, but I think both Milesplit and Dyestat will move them both in or near the top 5 in the next update.

Brentwood's front quartet is probably the best in the US. I have a hard time imagining that they won't finish Top 8, and will probably be somewhere around #4 or 5, at NXN this year even with that big of a gap back to their #5.

    2. Ok, let me rephrase: maybe not the best quartet (AF's trio probably seals that honor for them), but Brentwood probably has the strongest #4 that I can think of this year.

    3. Wow, so it seems we are still in a golden age of high school distance running. Yeah AF does look crazy legit. I'd be feeling pretty good about Brentwood though, as long as their top 4 beats the big hump of runners that come in like 2-3 people a second, they will be hard to beat no matter how their 5th runner does.

    4. Yeah, but it can happen, especially in big/deep fields. They were actually second at this meet (St. Xavier won 111-119), I just listed them first because they looked like they would end up being the better team. If you plug these ratings into what I rated NXN at last year, Brentwood would have finished fourth (4 runners scoring in the Top 25 is great, but a #5 scoring over 130 would have kept them off the podium).

    5. Miss your analysis, I hope you have a communications degree, you should be doing statistical analysis for some major network.
