initial Ratings Estimate: 200.0 ~ 14:48.00

Boys Summary: Louisville OH (158) placed four runners in the top 25 to win the team title against most of Michigan's finest with Saline MI (195) picking up second while Grand Rapids Christian MI claimed third with 229 points. The highlight of the meet, though, was the individual race: Corunna senior Noah Jacobs, the defending Michigan D2 Champion at 3200m (8:55.57)  ran 15:13 to come away with the individual title. Alpena senior Mitchell Day, the Michigan D1 Runner-up in XC last fall, finished second in 15:28 while Rockford MI junior Cole Johnson (D1 #3 in 2015 XC) claimed bronze in 15:33.

Girls Summary: A trio of sub-5 milers battled it out up front, with Lakeview senior Maggie Farrell (17:33) edging out Sielle Kearney (Traverse City Central) and Adelyn Ackley (Hart) with only 3 seconds separating first from third. Close behind, Lansing Catholic junior Olivia Theis ran 17:46 for fourth. Northville MI claimed the team title with 204 points over Lakeview (229), with Ohio's Centerville finishing third with 237 points while Birmingham Seaholm (245) and Beavercreek OH (255) weren't far behind. It is worth noting that both Northville and Centerville qualified for NXN last year, although both teams only had 3 of those athletes in the race today.

Looking towards the weekend ahead - Sep. 17

Looking towards the weekend ahead, what might be the most interesting meets of the weekend?

In the Northwest, I think the top meet (for me) is the Great Falls Invitational in Montana: Bozeman squares off against the bulk of the best in Montana (though unfortunately missing Billings Senior and possibly Glacier) for a preview of next week's Mountain West Classic showdown against the Spokane schools. Also of note should be the Northwest Classic on the Oregon State XC course, where we get to see Crater vs. Summit, Wilson, Lincoln and the best that Eugene has to offer, as well as Sundodger up in Washington where Central Valley (should win both sides) goes up against Rocky Mountain ID (#2 on both sides?) and Kamiakin WA.

Nationally, it is the first of several BIG weekends of action. Highlighting the schedule is Woodbridge Classic down in Southern California, where many of the top programs in the state race against several notable out-of-state programs: Southlake Carroll TX, Mountain Vista CO, Desert Vista AZ, Desert Hills UT and Palmer Ridge CO. That's a very flat/fast 3 mile course, and the times should be blazing fast as always. Elsewhere, the NXN-Southeast course is previewed by many teams at the Adidas XC Challenge in North Carolina. In the Heartland region, the biggest centrally-located meet unsurprisingly tends to bring together many of the best in the region at the Heartland Classic at held at Iowa State University. Also, a meet currently underway is the ever-impressive MSU Spartan Classic where the best of Michigan clash. This year's meet featured one of Ohio's stronger boys teams as well ( ***spoiler*** the Elite race results are already posted - some great individual efforts on both sides).

EDIT: Turns out the Great Falls Invitational changed their format this year.... for some reason, they ran four separate Tri-Meets instead of combining all the teams together. Not only that, but they separated all the top teams! Race 1 was Bozeman vs. Flathead/Billings West; Race 2 was Hellgate vs. Helena and Soda Springs ID; Race 3 was Sentinel vs. CMR/Capital; Race 4 was Big Sky, Butte, Great Falls and Cascade. Strange. Anyways, Bozeman beat down Flathead pretty handily in the first race. Timewise, Bozeman's boys total team time was about 10 seconds slower than Hellgate's last year. On the girls side, Bozeman's team times were about halfway between where Billings Senior and Hellgate were last year. Doesn't really say much, but that's about all I'll be taking away from that meet...

WA/OR Round-up - Sep. 10

Now that I've at least taken a quick look at the bulk of the meets I plan on rating, I went back and was more deliberate in my rating for WA/OR meets (as those are the meets I'll be focusing on most). Here is a breakdown of the UN-ROUNDED ratings (as you'll notice, the prior meets were all rounded to the nearest 5th second... also, Ash Creek was adjusted down a little because I went more in-depth in this look). I'll include the fastest teams/individuals, and in subsequent posts I will look at the top athletes/teams in these meets, plus perhaps a breakdown by classification...

Please note, this list includes some pretty low-key meets (in comparison to the usual All-State/All-Region focus of this blog). This is because I tried to include all of the invites from WA/OR from the last weekend, plus a couple notable meets from the week(s) prior, to get a good representation of all of the two states. There are a handful of meets that were not included, which was due to either insufficient background data on the runners (making the ratings even more uncertain than usual for early season races) or a lack of complete results posted to athletic.net (as all of these results come from there, due to the format streamlining this process). The only notable omission, in terms of All-State or All-Region comparisons, was the Tahoma Co-Ed Relays which featured, among others, notable programs such as Tahoma WA, Issaquah WA, Eastlake WA and Sunset OR.

Full list of meets from the past weekend not included below: Tahoma Co-Ed Relays WA, Asotin Island Run WA, Lakeview OR, and Brookings-Harbor OR.

Also, please note, that I am not ignoring meets from outside of WA/OR. I will at some point take a closer look at the other meets with notable Northwest athletes in them, although I don't know if I will go as far as posting a recap on the blog.

Times at the right represent my 200.0 rating mark. Numbers next to the athletes/teams represent the ratings (and Top-5 team averages) of the fastest at the meet. Athletes/teams are in bold, because otherwise this would be even more difficult to read.

St. Vrain Invitational CO - Sep. 10 results

St. Vrain Invitational CO - Sep. 10

VERY ROUGH initial Ratings Estimate: 200.0 ~ 14:55

Boys Summary: Very close races both individually and teamwise, with the 5A defending champions coming out ahead in both. Seniors Isaac Green (Monarch CO) and Ethan Powell (Air Academy CO) both ran 15:49 with Isaac Green edging out the win, while Widefield CO senior Maximilliano Martinez was one second behind in 15:50 and Monarch CO junior Charlie Perry an additional second behind in 15:51. While the front running advantage of Monarch would usually help out in most strong meets, this field favored the depth advantage of Mountain Vista as last year's NXN #12 finishers came away with the 71-72 win with Palmer Ridge CO a very close third at 76.

Girls Summary: Mountain Vista finished off the team sweep by dispatching Rio Rancho NM 84-109, with Battle Mountain CO a strong third with 119 points. Individually, Peak to Peak CO sophomore Quinn McConnell picked up the win as she ran 18:15 to Kayla Young (Denver North CO)'s 18:32.

National Recap - Weekend of Sep. 10

So, I was browsing DyeStat and Milesplit to check out if there were any summaries of this weekend's biggest meets in the nation. Didn't see anything on DyeStat (seems like that is mostly just a feed of video interviews these days), and the Milesplit "meets to watch" article was... well, severely lacking IMO (one of those meets might have been among the "MUST SEE" meets if it weren't for a bigger meet those teams attended 2 days later, or if you only wanted to focus on very select individuals/teams essentially running time trials by themselves for lack of competition, but most were just meets within the Milesplit geographic footprint featuring an elite team/individual up against no actual competition)... so here is a post to help round out the coverage. Please note, this is NOT all-inclusive as there are some other meets that I just haven't gotten around to giving a ratings estimate yet, and others that are already included on here or Tullyrunners that I didn't feel like double checking... so if there is a meet from this weekend that was among the best in the nation and it's not included here, it may be because I haven't rated it yet (or maybe I overlooked it). Feel free to note so in the comments section.

I'll keep the meet recaps short: notable finishes (Top individuals/teams at the meet, plus teams that average about 166/105+, and individuals that rate at 187/136+) and the top 7 finishers from notable teams.

Liberty Bell Invitational CO - Sep. 9 results

Liberty Bell Invitational CO - Sep. 9

VERY ROUGH initial Ratings Estimate: 200.0 ~ 14:35

Boys Summary: In the division 1 race, Rock Canyon CO edged out Albuquerque Academy NM 94-97 to win the team title while ABQ Academy senior Jordan Lesansee ran the fastest time on the day as he won the individual title in 15:18 with Cherry Creek CO's Kyle Moran close behind in 15:24. The fastest team of the day, however, was Silver Creek CO who ran away with the Division 2 title after placing three runners in the top 4.

Girls Summary: In a showdown of nationally elite athletes, Grandview senior Brie Oakley (26th at NXN and 3rd at Brooks PR 2 mile last year) came away with the win in 16:44 to shatter the previous course record, Jordyn Colter's 17:00.6 from 2012. Runner-up Lauren Gregory of Fort Collins (FLN All-American in 2014 and NXN-SW Runner-up last year before getting injured) also broke the old course record as she finished in 16:52. The incredible individual results didn't end there, as Anna Gibson of Jackson Hole WY finished third in the Division 1 race in 17:31, good for #5 All-Time at this meet, which happens to always be one of the very best in the Western US for girls. Teamwise, the top two teams at the meet were unfortunately in different classifications as Jackson Hole WY won the Division 1 title 75 with Albuquerque Academy NM (133) and Grandview CO (138) rounding out the top three, while Broomfield CO ran away with the Division 2 title with 39 points over Laramie WY (109).
