In the past, I have posted a listing of Hypothetical DMR, 4x800m and 4x1600m lists for Washington and sometimes Oregon. As this week marks the beginning of the post season in both states (League/Regional meets in Oregon, League/Sub-District meets in Washington), I figured now was a good time to take a look at that for this year. I may or may not do a post-season list to include all the championship season races as well. These lists are based on results posted to Athletic.net and include events (400m+) surrounding the distance, e.g. I include 3200m times at a VERY conservative estimation of 1600m ability (9:00 is included as only a 4:13.80 or a 4:10.00 listed as only a 1:54.24, for example). These are not guaranteed to be a perfect match for the best hypothetical teams (Athletic.net results aren’t always 100% accurate, and I used a simplified formula to look at only the two combinations of the #1 miler or #2 miler on each anchor leg)
To start off, here are the Washington Boys Hypothetical DMR rankings – broken down by classification, and only listing the Top 10 for each 2A-4A plus an honorable mention category for smaller schools.

Rob, welcome back.
ReplyDeleteSo the obvious question is .. how do you determine the appropriate 1200 meter time to use? Somehow you must use the 800 and 1600 meter times. Do you average them? That wouldn't seem right to me.
Any chance you can update these now that the season is over?
ReplyDeleteSorry for not responding to these comments earlier, last time I logged in here it wasn't letting me post comments to my own blog for some reason! Looks like that's fixed now, though.
ReplyDeleteHow the 1200m times are arrived at:
ReplyDeleteIn this list, I use very CONSERVATIVE conversions for surrounding events (e.g. 3200m times can be used for the 1600m leg), though I didn't include 800m -> 1600m conversions or 400m -> 800m conversions as I felt those were too big of a jump for this exercise. The 1200m times that are included are either the 800m times 7% slower per lap (e.g. 2:00 for 800m = 120 / 2 / 0.93 * 3) or 1500m/1600m/Mille times conservatively converted to 800m times. Normally I would use a 9.5% conversion ratio as above for 1600m -> 800m, but my more "conservative" estimates here used a 8.5%, meaning a 4:40.00 would be a 2:08.10 instead of a 2:06.70. From there, it's the same as for 800m marks.
Additionally, 1500m/1600m/Mile conversions are the standards used between the groups (1500m x 1.08 = Mile, and 1500m x 1.0736 = 1600m). Same ratios between 3k/3200m/2 Mile marks. The ratio used from 3200m -> 1600m is 6% rather than the usual 6.5%, meaning a 10:00.00 => 4:42.00 instead of 4:40.50.
Hope that's a clear enough explanation.
Oh, correction: I actually did use a 800m -> 1600m conversion, just an extra conservative one (12.5% instead of 9.5%, meaning a 2:06.00 would be a 4:48.00 instead of a 4:38.45.
ReplyDeleteAlso, I'll have an updated list out tonight. Possibly also a 4x1600m and/or 4x800m list as well.
