Meanwhile, up in Alaska, Allie Ostrander (Kenai Central AK) is back to dominating the competition as she has already crushed the fields in two of Alaska’s three largest invitationals. At the Bartlett Relays (which serves as the Pre-State meet) on August 18, she ran 17:58 to win by 43 seconds over the 5k course. A week later, she won the Skyview Invitational, which has seemed to be the best in-season meet in Alaska in recent years, running 17:37.6 to win by 73.1 seconds. Estimated ratings for Ostrander so far are 138.3 at Bartlett and 139.1 at Skyview, but it sure would be nice to see what she could do against bigger names at some point. In the team outlook, the Wasilla girls and West Valley boys appear to be the tops in the state at the halfway mark. At Skyview, Wasilla (63) scored wins over most of their top competition in West Anchorage (73) and small school defending champion Grace Christian (77), and at Bartlett beat West Anchorage 93-102. On the boys side, West Valley beat a shorthanded Service 33-75 (with Kodiak scoring 94) at Bartlett, and Service came back the week later to top Kodiak 46-103 at Skyview. Alaska starts and ends their state season early compared to the rest of the 49 states, but don’t be surprised to see the teams show up in the lower 48 and continue to challenge each other after the regular season is over.
