Racing started early this week with the Helena 7-on-7 MT and Bob Conley ID meets both on Thursday and are among the highlights of the weekend.
Results are already in for Helena 7-on-7 MT, although not yet posted to Athletic.net (so I don't have ratings for them yet). Summary from Helena: Annie Hill (16:47.26) over Tiahna Vladic (16:59.28) in the girls #1 runners race, with Bryn Morley finishing #8 (18:21.68) as she rounds back into form. On the boys side, Chase Equal (14:55.14) won again with Marshall Beatty (15:01.6) second and Ben Perrin (15:10.41) third. Bozeman was the top team on both sides, with the girls averaging 17:53.11 and the boys 15:26.39. Billings Senior (18:34.31 and 16:19.4), Missoula Hellgate (18:43.58 and 16:10.93), and Glacier (18:57.46 and 16:15.30) seemingly the best of the rest.
Bob Conley ID results (Idaho's "Pre-State" meet, where athletes and coaches get a first look at the new course which will host the state meet later this month) just got posted. Unfortunately, Jackson Hole WY (and several other notable girls teams) sent their 'B' team rather than their varsity, meaning no showdown between NW#1 Anna Gibson and the NW#4 Jackson Hole WY girls vs. NW#2 Lexy Halladay and NW#3 Mountain View ID girls. However, it was still a chance for Mountain View's runners to run against some very good individuals. Lexy Halladay won the title in 17:39.8 over NW#9 Michelle Pratt of Blackfoot (18:08.6) and NW#38 Mia Kopfenstein (18:25.8) of Meridian. On the boys side, the team showdown did materialize as Skyline beat Borah 51-73, with Mountain View showing a strong third with 82 points. Bonneville's R. Coen Haroldsen won the race in 15:31.7, with Borah's duo of Siyad Matan (15:35.3) and Sean Harren (15:39.4) took the next two spots. Preliminary ratings (200.0 = 14:53.85) for the top athletes/teams: 187.3 Haroldsen, 186.1 Matan, 184.7 Harren; 175.7 Skyline boys (16:06.14), 172.9 Borah boys (16:14.58), 166.9 Mountain View boys (16:32.46); 144.3 Halladay, 134.6 Pratt, 128.9 Klopfenstein; 125.6 Mountain View (18:35.58), 108.8 Twin Falls (19:25.54).
Also of some interest: DyeStat's latest regional (and national individual) rankings came out today. Mountain View ID girls are not ranked, while Naperville North IL girls (who they beat at Roy Griak) are now MW#2. Does that mean that the Northwest has MORE than 5 teams better than the #2 team in the Midwest? While I think the NW is pretty strong this year, I don't think it goes QUITE that deep. Whether that means Mountain View is stronger than the DyeStat ranksters think, or that they are giving Naperville North a "pass" because they don't think they ran well at Griak (though I'm not sure many teams would claim they did at a meet like that), or what... it will be interesting to see how it unfolds over the next six weeks.
*** EDIT: Unfortunately, Athletic.net has changed their webpages either yesterday (Friday, Oct. 7) or today (Saturday). I can no longer easily copy and paste results from the webpage, nor can I import the data via Excel (because they also block that by denying the "old browser" that Excel '10 uses from accessing the page). I will still be able to copy and paste at a MUCH slower rate (I will have to edit every single line, which for the 1000+ athlete races that I often look at will take a substantial time), but that does mean I won't be able to rate every WA/OR race from now on. ***
Hole in the Wall WA: Holy Names Academy WA senior Jordan Oakes (17:17.4) challenged the meet record as she edged Lake Steven WA's Taylor Roe (17:21.6) and Cascade-Leavenworth's Erin Mullins (17:35.4) to win the loaded girls race. The meet record is 17:10.4 (Amy-Eloise Neale 2012). The boys race saw a new meet record was when Camas senior Yacine Guermali (15:17.3) had a huge day as he upset Northwest's Tibebu Proctor (15:32.6) with a pair of sophomores (Mount Si's Joe Waskom and Woodinville's Luke Houser) running 15:34.1 and 15:39.1. The former boys meet record was 15:30.8 (set by Devon Grove in 2013). Poway CA won the boys team race with 169 points, with Glacier Peak WA (192), Camas WA (197), Gig Harbor WA (204), and Jesuit OR (215) rounding out the top 5. In the girls race, Jesuit OR won with 52 points while Camas WA (99), Edmonds-Woodway WA (110), Holy Names Academy WA (136) and Issaquah WA (148) rounded out the top 5.
Richland WA: Moscow ID senior Katherine Ruck won the girls race in 17:35.11 over Lewis & Clark WA junior Katie Thronson (17:45.13). The boys race was won by Henry Jackson's Matthew Watkins (14:52.51) with Amir Ado (Joel Ferris) second at 14:57.29. The much-anticipated battle at this meet was the boys teams, where Central Valley came up big to win with 93 points over Henry Jackson (112), North Central (117), and Bellarmine Prep (142). The girls side was a different story, with Lewis & Clark scoring 32 to run away with the team title (Hanford was second with 97).

Quick reminder for WA coaches/athletes
Quick reminder for Washington coaches and athletes: Due to the ruling of the WIAA a couple of years ago, some athletes are finally able to be coached for post-season meets on a limited basis!
Relevant PDF from the WIAA
Summary: If an athlete has qualified to run in the championship division at either NXN-Northwest, Footlocker West (and also NXN Nationals or Footlocker Nationals if applicable), then the coach can apply to continue coaching them for 10 practices after the end of the WIAA season (the state meet). You'll have to apply for a waiver to do so. You will also be allowed to attend and coach the athlete(s) at the meet (you do NOT need to apply for the waiver to do so). Athletes who are relegated to the JV or Open Varsity divisions at either NXN Northwest or Footlocker West can NOT be coached through this waiver.
This was a nice improvement over the previous situation, where athletes couldn't be coached by their school coaches after the conclusion of the state meet. It also gives more teams and athletes a reason to attend these meets, as it means more time that the coach can train the athletes :)
It will take a little bit of time to go through the waiver process, so if possible coaches should probably start the process well before the State meet. With such a short window between the state meet and NXN Regional meet, hopefully the folks in Boise can have a good idea early enough who will be able to qualify for the championship field (although in the future, perhaps the dates of NXR and BorderClash can be switched to give coaches a better chance to make the necessary inquiries? Just an idea, Nike...). I will try to do my part on here to give an unofficial gauge as to how highly rated athletes and teams might be, but the regional fields are determined not only by how fast you are but also who else signs up (and want in the Championship division rather than the Open Varsity races).
Hopefully, lots of coaches around Washington picked up on this and will more strongly consider sending athletes and teams to the regional meets. Last year, only 15% of the athletes at the Washington state meet went on to compete at NXR (and even less if you only looked at the Championship race), compared to 22% for Oregon. It would be nice if more of Washington's best were represented at the regional (and with luck, national) meet.

Top meets on Tap in the Northwest: Oct. 8
Weekend schedule - what meets this weekend have which ranked teams/individuals?
This week, there are five major meets:
The most intriguing race this weekend, in my opinion, is going to be at Bob Conley ID. This is a meet that features very strong teams up front on both sides, including the only match-up of multiple Top-4 teams: Jackson Hole WY squares off against Mountain View ID in quality girls field. The boys race is also promising, with the top two teams in Idaho squaring off with two more ranked teams in the mix as well. It is also the strongest individual field on the girls side, with 10 girls ranked in the NW top 50 ratings over the last couple of week. Even more impressive is when you consider that the girls field will match up the two top rated runners in the region, and a total of six of the Northwest's top 11! The boys side is no joke either, with seven Top-50 athletes in the field.
The main highlight at the Hole in the Wall WA meet is the girls race, where NW#1 Jesuit will run against four Washington teams ranked between #15 and #20, as well as an Edmonds-Woodway squad which should be Top 10 if they are at full strength. The girls individual battle will also be strong, tying Bob Conley for the most Top-50 runners with 10 runners rated at 121+ and also nearly matches up on the guys side with 6. This meet has almost all of the top girls programs on the west side of Washington. The boys side is also of interest, with two Top-22 teams facing a strong out of state team in Poway CA.
Richland WA features the deepest boys field with 8 ranked boys teams, along with 2 ranked teams in the girls race. #1 North Central will square off with #5 Bellarmine Prep is the highlight. Of the NW top 50 individuals I've rated over the last coupe weeks (which was ratings of 179+ and 121+), there are 12 boys (and 2 girls) set to toe the line. That is a very strong boys field, along with what should be a close girls team race between Mead and Lewis & Clark.
Over in Montana, the Helena 7-on-7 MT meet as always features the top teams and individuals from around the state. It is a meet which breaks runners up into different flights, just like Sunfair. Glacier's Annie Hill and Billings Senior's Tiahna Vladic are two of the best runners in the Northwest, and probably among the top 25 in the nation, which have traded wins over the last two weeks. One of them will most likely win once again, although there is still one lingering question with regards to the Montana girls cross country scene: is this going to be the week that Bryn Morley returns to the course? Bryn Morley, for those that might have somehow forgotten, is a fantastic runner who qualified for Footlocker two years ago as a freshman, and is the defending Montana B State Champion that was injured this spring and has been recovering ever since. I saw an article a couple of weeks ago (a preview of the Mountain West meet) that mentioned that Morley's coach thought she was "about a week from recovering (from her injury)." Although I wouldn't expect her to be near 100% in her first race back (if that is even to happen this week), it will be interesting to see how such a dynamic talent can influence the race and the Northwest XC scene in general.
The fifth major meet is one without many regionally ranked teams, but a very solid group of individuals: The Flat and Fast Invitational in Oregon. Sunset OR is the top ranked team on both sides, and their runners will be challenged by runners from a variety of different schools on both sides. There are four Top-50 boys and six Top-50 girls in the field, including a pair of Top-10 girls (Ember Stratton of Sunset and Ginger Murnieks of Sprague) and a Top-10 boy (Zane Fodge of McMinnville).

Northwest Regional Team Rankings - October 1
With the Alaska state meet in the books, and since I did a quick merge for most of the Southwest, I started wondering how the Northwest rankings would wind up, if I only included the meets from the past couple of weeks. This certainly won't be the best gauge for everyone (e.g. the girls rankings, where Lewis & Clark WA and Edmonds-Woodway WA were both missing one of their front trio of runners the last few meets), but it would be enough to get an idea of where the teams are roughly standing. Here is what I came up with:

notes: I expect that, if Edmonds-Woodway WA and Lewis & Clark WA girls had their full squads healthy and ready to go, they'd jump up to and possibly past Sunset and Eagle (although not necessarily). As such, were this to be actual rankings, I would have them both at least top 10 unless confirmed that their missing runners are out for the rest of the year (very doubtful in E-W's case as this was the first meet Parle has missed). Also, Star Valley WY was hard to include because they haven't really ran much since the Tiger/Grizz ID Invite almost a month ago. Their ratings at the Davis Open Regional is really based on what the Davis UT JV runners ran at Bob Firman vs. what they ran at that meet, so consider it a somewhat questionable, though I think fairly realistic, guess.
There are other teams not included which deserve a look, however I just don't have any recent ratings for them. Laramie WY boys is one that stands out, as they were a little better than #23 Jackson Hole at Liberty Bell CO. Laramie might be a Top 15 or so team. Their girls might be Top 20 as well, and the same for the Cheyenne Central WY girls.
I haven't been looking at ALL the teams around the nation, but based on what I've seen, I would expect that the Northwest's top 5 boys and top 4 girls teams are all comfortably in the US Top 30 this year. I am tempted to say they are all in the top 25, but California is always deep and Utah is looking good once again, so who knows... unfortunately, the national rankings at Milesplit and Dyestat disagree with me: Milesplit, last updated on Sep. 19, has 2 boys (#7 Bozeman, #23 Crater) and 3 girls (#13 Bozeman, #16 Jesuit, #17 Summit) in their top 25's; Dyestat, updated just last week (Sep. 29), has 2 boys (#7 Bozeman, #15 North Central) and 4 girls (#8 Bozeman, #18 Jesuit, #27 Mountain View, #30 Summit) in their Top 30.

Alaska State Meet results
Alaska State Meet (Oct. 1) - Top Individual and Team Ratings
Estimate: 200.0 = 14:46.11
Summary: West Anchorage boys looked dominant in winning the 4A title 33-89 over West Valley. West Anchorage showed just how deep they were by placing all seven varsity runners in the top 13! On the girls side, it was the West Valley girls who won 48-72 over Kenai Central. The fastest individuals on the day were Service junior Gus Schumacher (15:44), who was the top returner from last fall, and Juneau-Douglas freshman Sadie Tuckwood (18:16). Notable that the top three finishers in the 4A girls race were all freshmen, with the fourth finisher a sophomore and the first senior finishing seventh.

Fastest boys teams: West Anchorage (171.1), Service (161.8), West Valley (160.8), South Anchorage (160.6)
Fastest girls teams: West Valley (106.5), Kenai Central (99.0), Homer (91.9), Service (91.0), Chugiak (89.7)
Hopefully the West Anchorage boys and West Valley girls make it down to the lower 48 for a meet or two, now that the Alaskan season is over and they look like potential NXN Northwest Top-10 squads (if I were to come out with regional rankings, I would probably have West Anchorage boys at #6-8, with West Valley girls probably somewhere around #13-18)... and especially if they consider it an experience-building opportunity as West Anchorage are set to return four runners at/under 16:21 for next year, while West Valley has three freshmen in their top four! Four guys at/under 16:21 could easily become four guys at 15:55 or better, which could put them in very serious contention for a spot to NXN Nationals next year (that would be similar to Bozeman this year and last, which means potential US Top 10 if they develop a solid #5).
EDIT: Looking at the schedules posted to athletic.net, it looks like West Anchorage is planning on sending at least some kids (sometimes Alaskan teams send full squads, sometimes just an individual or two) to two meets in Oregon: Ash Creek Festival II this Saturday and George Fox next Saturday. At Ash Creek, they'll face off against South Eugene. George Fox will be a better gauge as they'll face three teams in Summit, Camas WA and Desert Vista AZ. West Valley also has George Fox on their schedule. Who knows if they'll be on the line in Boise in November, but at least if they send full teams to those Oregon meets they'll get some good competition in before they end their season.

Watchout Ratings: What they mean, part 2
Continuing the discussion on what my ratings mean, here is a chart that plots the times at the 2015 Washington State XC meet vs. their 3200m times (average of 2015 SB vs. 2015-2016 PR). The times, of course, are in raw seconds. 3200m times on the left (y), State XC time on the bottom (x). As you can see in the legend, the Blue dots and (linear) trendline represents ALL of the data (n = 437), while the Orange dots and (linear) trendline represents only the marks that were not statistical outliers (n = 313). The two formulas at the left are for the trendlines, with the one on top being the raw data trendline and the one on the bottom being the final trendline.
Keep in mind, as always, that these are all ROUGH estimates. Lots of things to consider, such as whether or not the State XC race was a particularly good race vs. bad race (you are comparing against a previous SB and later PR, of course), and some athletes are going to be better at one event than others.
Using these formulas, for example, would show that a 15:20.2 at the Washington State XC meet last fall would be on par with a 9:20.30. One extreme non-outlier matching that comparison was Peter Hogan of Bishop Blanchet, who placed third in the 3A race running 15:20.2 and his averaged 3200m time was 9:34.34, which is one of the more extreme marks that was not an outlier: he ran 9:20.36 later that year, but only had run 9:48.32 the year prior. On the other side of the extreme, but still not an outlier, an example would be a 18:32.3 at the Washington State XC meet ran by Rachel Kostama of Puyallup (4A #14). The previous year, she ran 11:02.05 and this spring ran 10:45.63, while the formula would equate a 18:32.3 to a 11:13.72 - or, in other words, she exceeded her XC performance both the spring before and the spring after. It could be argued that she didn't have a good race at State XC (IMO she ran slightly better at the Westside Classic, finishing fourth while she was the fifth finisher from the region at state), although it would seem more like she was just better in track than XC last fall. A third example, of someone closer to the middle, would be Heidi Smith of Glacier Peak (3A #10): she ran 18:53.5 at State (11:26.23), compared to 11:23.1h in 2015 and 11:30.65 in 2016 (note: the data above used only FAT marks, so her 2015 mark as well as her 2015-2016 PR included in the data was actually her 11:26.98 at the 2015 WESCO Championships).
The data above points to an estimated rating of 200.0 = 14:46.44, while the final revised rating I did a few months ago (which was based on XC marks) was 200.0 = 14:45.00 ... not an exact match, but a VERY close match (it suggests I might be undervaluing the Washington & Northwest XC performances very slightly, but 1.44 seconds is really isn't really a noticeable difference in the scheme of things).
In short, a large part of evaluating times in XC and comparing them to track marks is a very ROUGH process: there is a lot of variation (standard deviation for the non-outliers above is 1.69% of the median), and everyone has their strengths and weaknesses. The ratings attempt to average that out over the entire field in order to get an idea of how a performance at Race X compares to performance at Race Y. Early season, all my ratings are based pretty heavily on 3k/3200m/2mile marks coming into the season, gradually incorporating more from other XC races from known courses as the season goes on (both current-season comparisons within a few weeks of performances and sometimes a comparison of a race's profile vs. that of previous years). There are some innate issues with the process, but that will always be the case when doing analysis like this and in the end all the ratings are just estimates (meaning approximate rather than exacting) anyways.
note: if you wanted to know how a 3200m time would translate to WA State XC (instead of the other way around, as above), inverting the x & y axis gives the formula of y = 1.6512x - 0.8379 (where y = 2015 State XC mark, and x = 3200m). Keep in mind, though, that the 3200m mark used is the average of the 2015 SB and the 2015-2016 PR, so calculating from just the SB will give a different formula. FWIW, the average year-to-year rate of improvement for boys XC qualifiers was 2.16% (n = 243) and for girls it was 1.30% (n = 194), meaning if you assume an average rate of improvement the 3200m mark you would use would be 1.08% faster than the previous SB for boys and 0.65% faster for girls. Or, if you look beyond State XC qualifiers and include all athletes, the ROI was 2.09% for boys (n = 684) and 0.35% for girls (n = 427), meaning 1.04% and 0.17% for the halved ROI.
Additional side-note: You'll notice that there are more data points, and in particular more outliers, below the trendline rather than above. This is to be expected, for some combination of a few reasons: 1. this is a comparison of 3200m PRs and/or Season Bests vs. the result of one specific race, 2. when looking at what an athlete is like when they are at or near their best, any specific performance would likely be closer to "average" (meaning worse) in comparison; 3. high school athletes are often more developed anaerobically than aerobically, meaning they aren't as strong at longer distances; 4. high school coaches might focus more of their year-long training on the anaerobic system rather than aerobic system compared to what is ideal for racing at the Washington State XC Championships.
