Alaska State Meet results

Alaska State Meet (Oct. 1) - Top Individual and Team Ratings
Estimate: 200.0 = 14:46.11

Summary: West Anchorage boys looked dominant in winning the 4A title 33-89 over West Valley. West Anchorage showed just how deep they were by placing all seven varsity runners in the top 13! On the girls side, it was the West Valley girls who won 48-72 over Kenai Central. The fastest individuals on the day were Service junior Gus Schumacher (15:44), who was the top returner from last fall, and Juneau-Douglas freshman Sadie Tuckwood (18:16). Notable that the top three finishers in the 4A girls race were all freshmen, with the fourth finisher a sophomore and the first senior finishing seventh.

Hopefully the West Anchorage boys and West Valley girls make it down to the lower 48 for a meet or two, now that the Alaskan season is over and they look like potential NXN Northwest Top-10 squads (if I were to come out with regional rankings, I would probably have West Anchorage boys at #6-8, with West Valley girls probably somewhere around #13-18)... and especially if they consider it an experience-building opportunity as West Anchorage are set to return four runners at/under 16:21 for next year, while West Valley has three freshmen in their top four! Four guys at/under 16:21 could easily become four guys at 15:55 or better, which could put them in very serious contention for a spot to NXN Nationals next year (that would be similar to Bozeman this year and last, which means potential US Top 10 if they develop a solid #5).

EDIT: Looking at the schedules posted to athletic.net, it looks like West Anchorage is planning on sending at least some kids (sometimes Alaskan teams send full squads, sometimes just an individual or two) to two meets in Oregon: Ash Creek Festival II this Saturday and George Fox next Saturday. At Ash Creek, they'll face off against South Eugene. George Fox will be a better gauge as they'll face three teams in Summit, Camas WA and Desert Vista AZ. West Valley also has George Fox on their schedule. Who knows if they'll be on the line in Boise in November, but at least if they send full teams to those Oregon meets they'll get some good competition in before they end their season.
