As the biggest meet to date in the nation, I thought I would give Woodbridge it’s own little space here.
The boys meet featured some of the best teams in California against a sampling of teams from the Southwest. Pre-race favorites Great Oak CA came away with the win scoring 88 points, while Martin Luther King CA (123) edged out a pair of Southwest region teams in Desert Hills UT (127) and Mountain Vista CO (141). Rounding out the top eight were West Ranch CA (189), Agoura CA (223), Madera South CA (257), and Desert Vista AZ (266). To put those scores into perspective, I was thinking before the season began that Great Oak CA would be a US Top 5-10 team, with Desert Hills UT and Madera South CA also Top 15 squads. It is early in the season, and this meet is always very strong, but very impressive runs for a few other teams breaking into the mix and showing they deserve some attention this fall.
The girls meet featured a similar break-away quartet followed by a couple other teams seemingly ahead of the pack. Great Oak CA, probably the #2 team in the nation, won the meet with 59 points over upstart Sunset OR (86) who showed they are probably going to be a factor once again in the Northwest, if not the nation, a couple weeks ago when Freshman standout Ember Stratton opened the season running 10:11.6 for 3k. Finishing third was Desert Vista AZ, a team expected to be in contention for a return trip to NXN after finishing fifth last December. Arcadia CA (163) was well ahead of another potential NXN squad in Serrano CA (241), with Mountain Vista CO (269) rounding out the top six. Also notable was the individual race at the meet, where Mountain Vista sophomore Allison Chipman (16:31.1) outlasted Tesoro CA’s Amanda Gehrich (16:37.5) and Sunset’s Ember Stratton (16:38.0) for the individual title.
