(9/06) Bobcat Invitational IA – In years past, one might not have been surprised to hear that the Dowling Catholic girls won a major in-state showdown, or that the Pleasant Valley boys won a major in-state showdown, but this year the roles seem to be reversed: Heartland bubble team Pleasant Valley IA pulled off another upset, this time winning 34-48 over HL#1/US#20 Dowling Catholic IA. While the results didn’t include one of Dowling Catholic’s projected scorers, it likely wouldn’t have made a difference and this is the second time Pleasant Valley has beaten a nationally ranked team this year. If these early season meets are any indication, Pleasant Valley is a very strong team this year. In the boys race, HL#3/US#19 Dowling Catholic looked dominant as they scored 32 points to (HL bubble team) Pleasant Valley’s 77. Also of note, Boone junior Chandler Austin (15:26) beat Valley senior Ben Anderson (15:29). Anderson ran the best time at state in all classifications last year, while Austin is the top returner in the 3A classification after finishing third last year.
