Portland Catholic Preview OR ratings

Jesuit won both sides of the fourth annual Portland Catholic Preview, with performances at least as good as hoped for the Crusader squads. Times aren’t comparable to previous years as this meet was run on a different course this time around.

On the boys side, Jesuit edged Central Catholic 25-32 in what essentially amounted to a dual meet between the two teams. Crusader sophomore Joshua Schumacher won the 4k race in 12:22.22 over senior teammate Max Hite (12:41.28), with CC senior Zack Lavier finishing third in 12:51.78. Valley Catholic’s Jacob Godshalk was the first finisher from a different school as he was ninth in 13:09.69, just edging out Central Catholic’s #5 runner. As you will see, it was a competitive battle within the #3-7 packs, but Jesuit seems to have the stronger front runners at least on this day. Unfortunately, these two teams won’t face off again until the 6A State Championship on October 31.

In the girls race, it was another two team race with Jesuit winning by a larger margin over St. Mary’s Academy 20-40. The interesting note here is that Jesuit’s dominance was established with a trio of freshmen running as their top three, with that third freshman only 5 seconds behind SMA’s Lacey Conner, a Top-10 returner from state last year. It will be very interesting to see how this Crusader freshman class compares to the rest of the state, and Jesuit’s hopes of keeping pace with Summit and Sunset this fall. By the way, the top runner from a third team was Central Catholic’s Hannah Lavier who finished #13 in 16:34.38. It is also notable that Jesuit held out their top three returners, which seemed to be a trend for the top Oregon girls programs in this opening week.

  1. Jesuit may be the Camas of 2015. Four freshmen in the top 6. Keely McCormick was at Kamiakin last year. They do have some kids back from their state team last year, but they may have trouble making varsity.
