(note: teams/individuals in bold meet the expected NXR Championship 'standard' of an approximate 170/114 team average or 180/125 individual rating, as I have been highlighting previously)
Do you have a list of the all-time top boys TEAM times from Sun Willows since it's been a 5k? Better yet, do you have a list adjusted by speed ratings? That would be awesome to look at, and I believe you posted one or the other several years ago. Boys individuals would be great too! Thanks.
ReplyDeleteI do have an All-Time list. I'll be posting an updated version soon. I don't have one adjusted by speed ratings, though, so keep in mind when looking at the lists:
Delete2005-2007? (might have been 2006-2007, don't remember exactly) the course was long so times were slower
2015-2017? (might have been 2016-2017, don't remember exactly) the course was faster due to sufficiently rounding out turns and a few other changes
But otherwise, it's run fairly similar ever since the move to 5k (1997) despite a couple small changes in layout every few years. Most of the discrepancies beyond those years are due to weather and quality of the field.
Also, how did the course times compare to 2018 and 2017? Times seemed to be more like 2017 than 2018. But the course was exactly like 2018 (much tougher, with more hills). Weather was better than last year, but not much better. Do you think better times were due to conditions, or faster athletes?
ReplyDeleteShort answer: Faster than 2018, slower than 2017. Pretty much right on par with 2008-2014. And yes, a combination of both. :)
DeleteFor a more precise answer, here is a scatter plot of the times (adjusted for level of competition, all races included w/ a modifier to include boys alongside girls): https://imgur.com/a/rjkh1k3
DeleteThe orange dots/line is the 2018 times, blue is 2019 and silver is 2017. Based on the top 5/7 of the race when taking out the weaker teams (which left 65 teams from 2019, 58 teams from 2018 and 55 teams from 2017), using the trendline that best fits this group (mostly the #2-5 scorers on teams and individuals within that range), the 2018 course was running about 15 seconds slower than the 2019 course, about 22 seconds slower than the 2017 course. The 2019 course was about 7-8 seconds slower than the 2017 course.
This is fascinating! Are you able to do this for all the years going back to 1997 (or at least 2006) and post it?
DeleteMaybe if I find the time over the winter I'll see about taking a stab at that.
