Watchout's Ratings: What they mean

I try to remind people every once in a while of what these ratings mean. Used to be, I would explain it on the Dyestat forums rather than here, but since that forum is closed down this is really the only place where I'm going to talk much about XC. I probably should have done this earlier this year, but it's a good topic to cover regardless:

What do these abstract ratings mean?

Let's put them into track terms. Here's a quick chart of what several ratings would be for a 3200m and 3k time on a track (at sea-level). Do keep in mind, though, that comparing across different events is tricky: some athletes are better at XC than they are at the mile or 2 mile on the track compared to their peers.

Rating = 3200m - 3000m

215 =   8:30.45 -   7:55.45 | 170 =   9:51.04 -   9:10.52 | 125 = 11:11.64 - 10:25.60
212 =   8:35.82 -   8:00.46 | 167 =   9:56.42 -   9:15.53 | 122 = 11:17.01 - 10:30.60
209 =   8:41.19 -   8:05.46 | 164 = 10:01.79 -   9:20.53 | 119 = 11:22.39 - 10:35.61
206 =   8:46.57 -   8:10.47 | 161 = 10:07.16 -   9:25.54 | 116 = 11:27.76 - 10:40.61
203 =   8:51.94 -   8:15.47 | 158 = 10:12.54 -   9:30.54 | 113 = 11:33.13 - 10:45.62
200 =   8:57.31 -   8:20.48 | 155 = 10:17.91 -   9:35.55 | 110 = 11:38.51 - 10:50.62
197 =   9:02.69 -   8:25.48 | 152 = 10:23.28 -   9:40.55 | 107 = 11:43.88 - 10:55.62
194 =   9:08.06 -   8:30.49 | 149 = 10:28.66 -   9:45.56 | 104 = 11:49.25 - 11:00.63
191 =   9:13.43 -   8:35.49 | 146 = 10:34.03 -   9:50.56 | 101 = 11:54.62 - 11:05.63
188 =   9:18.80 -   8:40.50 | 143 = 10:39.40 -   9:55.57 |   98 = 12:00.00 - 11:10.64
185 =   9:24.18 -   8:45.50 | 140 = 10:44.77 - 10:00.57 |   95 = 12:05.37 - 11:15.64
182 =   9:29.55 -   8:50.51 | 137 = 10:50.15 - 10:05.58 |   92 = 12:10.74 - 11:20.65
179 =   9:34.92 -   8:55.51 | 134 = 10:55.52 - 10:10.58 |   89 = 12:16.12 - 11:25.65
176 =   9:40.30 -   9:00.52 | 131 = 11:00.89 - 10:15.59 |   86 = 12:21.49 - 11:30.66
173 =   9:45.67 -   9:05.52 | 128 = 11:06.27 - 10:20.59 |   83 = 12:26.86 - 11:35.66

It usually takes a low/mid 190's to qualify as an individual for either national meet on the boys side.
It usually takes a low/mid 140's to qualify as an individual for either national meet on the girls side.

It usually takes a mid/high 170's (average) to qualify as an At-Large team for NXN on the boys side.
It usually takes a low/mid 120's (average) to qualify as an At-Large team for NXN on the girls side.

It usually takes a mid/high 160's (average) to finish as a Top 10/15 team at NXN-NW on the boys side.
It usually takes a mid/high 100's (average) to finish as a Top 10 team at NXN-NW on the girls side.

note: the fields at NXR do vary - sometimes it will take a low 170's average to place top 12-15 on the boys side, or sometimes a girls team can average low 100's and manage a top 10 finish, so those NXR numbers above are meant as a ROUGH estimate in an "average" year with "average" attendance.

Utah boys: Best in the US once again?

Seems like this is being said every year the last few years, but WOW is that state good this year.

American Fork UT: In my very quick and questionable look at a race involving them this year, I looked at the Viking Invitational (because it was a rare match-up with an out of state power, Dana Hills CA). Everyone knows that AF's top trio this year is insane, but just how good are they? Let's take a step back for a moment.

Casey Clinger is the defending NXN Champion, and likely the top runner in the nation this year. This spring, he won the Arcadia 3200m race (8:50.70) and is the top returner from the Brooks PR 2 mile (8:51.68) where he finished third.

Another of their trio, McKay Johns, was injured for most of last year's XC season after finishing 42nd at NXN as a sophomore. In his short season, he ran 3 races where he significantly improved each time out: #32 at the state meet, #19 at NXN-Southwest and then #31 at NXN Nationals (#10 returner). This spring, he ran a 4:10.37 at the Arcadia mile, good for third place and was the #2 non-senior behind teammate Patrick Parker (4:09.87). He was second to now-graduated Brody Smith (Cody WY, NXN#12 last fall) in the Great Southwest Mile (4:10.70-4:11.20 at altitude). At the Utah State meet, Johns was third in the 1600m (4:12.72) behind Casey Clinger (4:07.52) and now-graduated Logan MacKay of Davis (4:10.65). In the State 3200m race, Johns was second once again to teammate Casey Clinger (9:08.48 to 9:13.41). As he never ran a 3200m at sea-level, it's hard to fairly compare his races at that distance, but his 9:05.52 PR at BYU is probably worth a sub-9 (NCAA adjustments would put it at 8:53.51). Eerily similar story to another recent young prodigy: Kai Wilmot of North Central WA, who along with American Fork have been the top 2 distance programs in the US since 2007, dealt with injury problems throughout his junior and senior seasons before pulling out an inspirational win at NXN in 2012 with standout teammate Tanner Anderson 9 seconds back in third. Could American Fork and McKay Johns duplicate that part of the story and go from injured to NXN Champion with a teammate close behind?

Which brings us to the third part of the AF trio, Patrick Parker. Parker finished top-50 at NXN last fall, and showed even more improvement this spring as he finished seventh at the Adidas Dream Mile (4:06.72) behind six graduated seniors. He ran a PR of 9:04.51 to finish a close second to teammate Casey Clinger at the BYU Invitational (9:02.58 to 9:04.51), which is again hard to compare easily because it is at altitude but NCAA conversions would put it at 8:52.52.

So, American Fork has 3 guys who might be all sub-8:55 guys coming into the year? That's some good front running, but what is their depth like? Their #4 and #5 runners in the 3200m this spring were both freshman: Carson Clinger (10:05.41) and Dalton Brems (10:07.73), both of which would probably be in the 9:50's at sea level. In XC so far, they have been staying around 75 seconds behind their trio... which is GREAT for potential NXN Top-5 finishing individuals.

US#1? Yeah, I'd say so. Without further ado, the estimated ratings at the aforementioned Viking Invitational (200.0 ~ 14:50.79):

1 - 12 - Casey Clinger - 14:43.0 - American Fork UT - 202.6
2 - 12 - McKay Johns - 14:45.0 - American Fork UT - 201.9
3 - 12 - Patrick Parker - 14:48.0 - American Fork UT - 200.9
4 - 12 - Zachary Ericksen - 15:26.0 - Lone Peak UT - 188.1
5 - 12 - Seth Freckleton - 15:34.0 - Lone Peak UT - 185.4
6 - 11 - Justin Hartshorn - 15:50.0 - Lone Peak UT - 180.1
7 - 11 - Jack Landgraf - 15:53.0 - Dana Hills CA - 179.0
8 - 10 - Carson Clinger - 15:59.0 - American Fork UT - 177.0
9 - 10 - Dalton Brems - 16:01.0 - American Fork UT - 176.4
10 - 11 - Josh Ericksen - 16:08.0 - Lone Peak UT - 174.0

That is seriously fast. It may also be overrated by a couple points, but it seems like a good fit (Stansbury close to their Bob Firman races - actually, a slightly lower; girls individuals look about right, the other boys teams look about right). You would think it is going to be hard to unseat American Fork from the top spot if they run like that all year, as that is likely to be 3 runners inside the Top 5-10 overall at NXN with their #4 and #5 placing somewhere near the 60s. Also, fun fact: if they run like that, there is no team that could possibly win in a dual meet (going 1-2-3 is an automatic win in dual meet scoring even if the other team put all 7 runners infront of their #4).

Utah isn't only the story of American Fork, however. And it's not even certain that they are the best.

Davis ran one of the fastest times ever at Eagle Island when they won the Bob Firman Invitational last weekend (North Central WA ran 78:58.3 in 2012 before their #1 Kai Wilmot got injured, Gig Harbor WA ran 79:08.3 in 2013, while Davis ran 79:15.6 last weekend). That is a course tested by multiple NXN Champion squads and some of the best teams in history, and Davis was right up there with their time.

Their ratings from that race:

 9 - 12 - Josh Peters - 15:37.5 - Davis (UT) - 191.1
13 - 12 - Matt Ward - 15:45.2 - Davis (UT) - 188.6
16 - 12 - Jacob Vaughn - 15:47.5 - Davis (UT) - 187.9
24 - 11 - Seth Stromberg - 16:01.0 - Davis (UT) - 183.4
 2 - 12 - Devin Jaster - 16:04.4 - Davis (UT) - 182.3 (JV)
34 - 12 - Brigham Halverson - 16:15.0 - Davis (UT) - 178.8
 7 - 11 - Conner Jones - 16:21.9 - Davis (UT) - 176.5 (JV)

Also in the race were a few other very strong teams and individuals, the teams would likely be among the favorites to finish Top-5 at NXR if they weren't in the ridiculously loaded Southwest regional (Ogden was third and Springville fourth behind Davis and perennial power North Central WA):

1 - 12 - Talon Hull - 15:25.0 - Weber UT - 195.3
2 - 12 - Garrett Barton - 15:28.8 - Ogden UT - 194.0
3 - 12 - Travis Feeny - 15:29.3 - Ogden UT - 193.8
4 - 10 - Grant Gardner - 15:29.7 - Springville UT - 193.7
5 - 11 - Andy Monroe - 15:33.1 - Crater OR - 192.6 (NXN-NW #3 last fall and #20 returner from NXN)

2 - 12 - Garrett Barton - 15:28.8 - Ogden - 194.0
3 - 12 - Travis Feeny - 15:29.3 - Ogden - 193.8
27 - 11 - Christian Warren - 16:08.8 - Ogden - 180.8
75 - 12 - Max Jones - 16:43.5 - Ogden - 169.4
87 - 11 - Ben Keller - 16:49.6 - Ogden - 167.4
103 - 11 - Andrew Blackham - 17:00.0 - Ogden - 164.0
122 - 11 - Alejandro Torres - 17:17.2 - Ogden - 158.3

4 - 10 - Grant Gardner - 15:29.7 - Springville - 193.7
17 - 11 - Brandon Garnica - 15:47.8 - Springville - 187.8
21 - 12 - Haden Penrod - 15:55.8 - Springville - 185.1
79 - 11 - Caleb Garnica - 16:45.8 - Springville - 168.6
81 - 10 - Carter Paxton - 16:46.9 - Springville - 168.3
83 - 12 - Paul Young - 16:47.6 - Springville - 168.1
89 - 10 - Adam Kreiger - 16:50.9 - Springville - 167.0

That same weekend, Timpanogos won the Nike Portland invitational, led by the individual champion who won a duel over a highly ranked runner from Washington (Tibebu Proctor 14:56.0). Their ratings:

 1 - 12 - Joe Benson - 14:54.2 - Timpanogos - 198.0
14 - 11 - Brennan Benson - 15:41.4 - Timpanogos - 182.0
20 - 11 - Ben Berlin - 15:50.1 - Timpanogos - 179.1
23 - 11 - Spencer Robinson - 15:56.9 - Timpanogos - 176.8
33 - 11 - Anthony Ortiz - 16:06.2 - Timpanogos - 173.7
50 - 12 - JT Gardner - 16:24.3 - Timpanogos - 167.5
61 - 11 - Kolten Bramall - 16:31.2 - Timpanogos - 165.2

Oh, and then there was Desert Hills at Woodbridge:

4 - 12 - Jaiden Melendrez - 14:13.0 - Desert Hills - 192.1
49 - 12 - Spencer Ford - 15:00.6 - Desert Hills - 174.9
54 - 11 - Bryson King - 15:04.9 - Desert Hills - 173.3
96 - 12 - Joshua Gibb - 15:29.7 - Desert Hills - 164.4
114 - 11 - Ethan Ashby - 15:36.3 - Desert Hills - 162.0
15 - 12 - Matt Allred - 15:45.5 - Desert Hills - 158.7
143 - 11 - Tyler Phillips - 15:47.5 - Desert Hills - 158.0

As a freebie, here is a scoring merge of the top 16 SW teams from those meets:

  1.  83 Davis UT - Bob Firman ID #1
  2.  91 American Fork UT - Viking UT #1
  3. 158 Timpanogos UT - Nike Portland OR #1
  4. 165 Mountain Vista CO - Woodbridge CA #1
  5. 166 Lone Peak UT - Viking UT #2
  6. 175 Ogden UT - Bob Firman ID #3
  7. 175 Springville UT - Bob Firman ID #4
  8. 177 Palmer Ridge CO - Woodbridge CA #2
  9. 262 Pine View UT - Bob Firman ID #8
  10. 265 Desert Vista AZ - Woodbridge CA #4
  11. 272 Skyridge UT - Bob Firman ID #13 w/ #3 making season debut in the D1 race
  12. 273 Spanish Fork UT - Bob Firman ID #9
  13. 280 Desert Hills UT - Woodbridge CA #7
  14. 285 Orem UT - Bob Firman ID #11
  15. 301 Riverton UT - Bob Firman ID #14
  16. 317 Stansbury UT - Bob Firman ID D1 #2 (the ever-impressive JV squad of Davis was #1)
(Silver Creek CO, Rock Canyon CO and Albuquerque Academy NM would all be among this group as well based on Liberty Bell CO, and I'm sure there are a half dozen others from around the region from other meets, but all 16 of those teams above most certainly belong in the very deep NXN Southwest field)

Also, a look at the top teams from all regions from the notable meets I've taken a look at recently (Bob Firman ID, Woodbridge CA, Mountain West MT, Roy Griak MN, Nike Portland OR, Viking UT):

  1.  86 Davis UT - Bob Firman ID #1
  2.  95 American Fork UT - Viking UT #1
  3. 164 North Central WA - Bob Firman ID #2
  4. 168 Timpanogos UT - Nike Portland OR #1
  5. 181 Mountain Vista CO - Woodbridge CA #1
  6. 184 Lone Peak UT - Viking UT #2
  7. 188 Palmer Ridge CO - Woodbridge CA #2
  8. 192 Ogden UT - Bob Firman ID #3
  9. 194 Springville UT - Bob Firman ID #4
  10. 221 Bozeman MT - Mountain West MT #1
  11. 226 Crater OR - Bob Firman ID #5
  12. 227 Wayzata MN - Roy Griak MN #1
  13. 232 Skyline ID - Bob Firman ID #6
  14. 235 Great Oak CA - Woodbridge CA #3

It's too bad I haven't gotten a good look at The Woodlands TX or Brentwood TN yet, as I think they are probably US#3/4 right now.

Utah is entering their championship season schedule next week, with their state championship on October 19. It will be interesting to see how the teams and individuals do there, as well as NXN Southwest (and, likely, NXN and/or FLN)

WIAA Allocations posted

WIAA State Allocations were posted recently, with an interesting development: in 3A, the Eastern Regional is no more as there were so few schools that it allowed those districts to "glue" onto the next nearest district, which happens to be the Seattle-area District II. This is good news for XC fans, as it might nearly double the amount of Eastside teams that will be eligible to qualify for state (the GSL and MCC should both send 2 teams to the new regional, although who knows if that is how it will actually work out), although at the same time it will likely mean that a solid KingCo school won't make it to the regional meet. Still, a net win for the state overall.

Whenever I get around to posting a new class leaderboard, I will denote which athletes/teams would advance to state as-ranked. For now, here is a breakdown of the allocations and expected regional alignment:

4A District I = 2
4A District II = 2
4A District III/IV = 8 in 2016, 7 in 2017
4A District V = 1 (Eastern Regional)
4A District VI = 2
4A District VIII = 1 in 2016, 2 in 2017 (Eastern Regional)

3A District I = 4 in 2016, 3 in 2017
3A District II, V and VIII = 7
3A District III/IV = 5 in 2016, 6 in 2017

2A District I/II = 3 in 2016, 4 in 2017
2A District III = 6 in 2016, 5 in 2017
2A District IV = 3
2A District V-VII = 4

1A District I/II = 4 (5 for girls in 2016 only)
1A District III = 1 in 2016, 2 in 2017
1A District IV = 3
1A District V = 3 (4 for boys in 2016)
1A District VI = 1 in 2016, 2 in 2017
1A District VII = 3 in 2016, 2 in 2017

B District I/II Boys = 2 in 2016, 3 in 2017 (for girls, see District IV)
B District IV = 5 for boys; 4 girls in 2016, 3 in 2017 (District I/II combines for girls only)
B District V/VI = 4 boys, 1 girls
B District VII/IX = 5 boys in 2016, 4 boys in 2017; 3 girls in 2016, 4 girls in 2017

EDIT: Unfortunately, the 4A Northwest Regional has gone the way of the dodo... another step backwards.

Northwest Girls Outlook - post Sep. 24 weekend

Now that the biggest weekend in the Northwest season is in the books (Bob Firman, Mountain West and Nike Portland all on the same weekend and among the bigger/better meets of the season), it is probably a good time to start taking a look at how teams might compare to one another. I'll keep this post very simple, as I haven't finished looking at how all the meets compare yet - might update this post at some point, I don't know. However, I will at least post this much to get the rough conversation started.

What teams were the fastest at the major NW meets this weekend?

Here are the ROUGH estimates I have so far for the meets:

14:24.31 Mountain West MT
14:44.46 Nike Portland OR
15:09.44 Bob Firman ID
14:20ish? Meriwether OR
14:45ish? Bellevue WA
15:45ish? Roy Griak MN (out of region, but important for NW girls w/ Mountain View ID)

which would give the following breakdown (NW teams in bold, team averages adjusted to Bob Firman as the standard) -

Tier 1.5: Jackson Hole WY (18:50.48 @ Bob Firman ID), American Fork UT (18:53.32 @ Bob Firman ID)

Tier 2.0: Jesuit OR (18:58.00 @ Bob Firman ID), Davis UT (18:58.02 @ Bob Firman ID), Bozeman MT (18:59.43 // 18:02.88 @ Mountain West MT), Edina MN (19:04.55 // 19:49.30 @ Roy Griak MN)

Tier 2.5: Mountain View ID (19:13.05 // 19:58.14 @ Roy Griak MN), Skyline UT (19:16.20 @ Bob Firman ID), Naperville North IL (19:16.69 // 20:05.04 @ Roy Griak MN)

Tier 3.0: Skyridge UT (19:27.02 @ Bob Firman ID), Sunset OR (19:28.12 // 18:56.04 @ Nike Portland OR), Claremont CA (19:29.36 // 20:15.08 @ Roy Griak MN), Eagle ID (19:29.98 @ Bob Firman ID), Springville UT (19:31.62 @ Bob Firman ID), Pine View UT (19:32.70 @ Bob Firman ID)

Tier 3.5: Billings Senior MT (19:34.85 // 18:36.55 @ Mountain West MT), Timpanogos UT (19:36.62 // 19:04.30 @ Nike Portland OR), Boise ID (19:41.82 @ Bob Firman ID), Johnston IA (19:43.29 // 20:29.56 @ Roy Griak MN), Wayzata MN (19:45.56 // 20:31.92 @ Roy Griak MN), Glacier Peak WA (19:46.71 // 19:14.82 @ Bellevue WA), Weber UT (19:46.80 @ Bob Firman ID), Riverton UT (19:48.54 @ Bob Firman ID), Minneapolis Washburn (19:49.39 // 20:35.90 @ Roy Griak MN), Summit OR (19:49.47 // 19:16.80 @ Nike Portland OR), Madison ID (19:50.52 @ Bob Firman ID), Missoula Hellgate MT (19:50.68 // 18:51.60 @ Mountain West MT), Sheldon OR (19:51.02 // 19:18.31 @ Nike Portland OR), Sioux Falls Lincoln SD (19:51.34 // 20:37.92 @ Roy Griak MN)

Notes:
"Tier 1.5" are teams that could probably be US Top-10 (if they don't have an excessive spread)
"Tier 2.0" are teams that could probably be US Top-15 (if they don't have an excessive spread)
"Tier 2.5" are teams that could probably be US Top-35 (if they don't have an excessive spread)
"Tier 3.0" are teams that could probably be US Top-50 (if they don't have an excessive spread)
"Tier 3.5" are teams that could probably be NW Top-10 with good races at NXN-NW (if they don't have an excessive spread)

note that just because a team made the cut for a higher tier doesn't mean they are a better team - team average is just one measure, and one race on one day does not define how good a team is this season.

Also, for what it's worth... if I were to come up with a NW Top-5 rankings, I would probably have something along the lines of:

1. Jesuit OR = Won Bill Chapman OR; Won Bob Firman ID
2. Bozeman MT = Won Bozeman MT; Won Great Falls MT; Won Mountain West MT
3. Mountain View ID = Won Jimmy Driscoll ID (s/h); Won Tiger/Grizz ID; Second at Roy Griak MN
4. Jackson Hole WY = Won Bear Trap WY (s/h); Second BYU UT; Won Liberty Bell CO; Fourth Bob Firman ID
5. Lewis & Clark WA = Won Highlander WA

Notes:
"Tier 1.0" are teams that could probably be US Top-5 (if they don't have an excessive spread)

1. North Central WA = Won Tracy Walters WA; Second at Bob Firman ID
2. Bozeman MT = Won Bozeman MT; Won Great Falls MT; Won Mountain West MT
3. Crater OR = Won Crusader OR; fifth at Bob Firman ID
4. Skyline ID = Third at Cardinal Classic ID (s/h); Won Tiger/Grizz ID; sixth at Bob Firman ID
5. Bellarmine Prep WA = Won Bellarmine WA (s/h); seventh at Bob Firman ID

Mountain West Classic MT - Sep. 24 results

Mountain West Classic MT - Sep. 24

initial Ratings Estimate: 200.0 ~ 14:24.31

Summary: In the showdown between Montana's best and many of the Spokane area's best, Bozeman swept the team titles over Lewis & Clark on the boys side (62-122) and over Billings Senior on the girls side (57-141) with some very strong showings in this high caliber meet. Also of significant national note, Tiahna Vladic won the girls race in 17:04.63 after battling with Glacier's Annie Hill through 2 miles. Hill had the advantage at the 2 mile mark, but struggled over the final mile to finish in 12th. Bozeman girls showed strong pack running up front as they claimed the #3-5 positions with Piper Meuwissen (17:35.43), Camila Noe (17:39.80), and Kenenni Wiegand (17:41.75) beating the defending Idaho 4A State Champion Katherine Ruck (17:44.35).

Early Returns: Sep. 24 weekend

Some good racing already for the NW athletes and teams. Here is a very quick preliminary look at the results so far:

Mountain West Classic MT (200.0 ~ 14:20ish) = Bozeman MT swept the team titles, Amir Ado broke up the Montana boys up front by finishing second (15:01.47) to Bozeman's Chase Equall (14:58.95). Bigger individual race was on the girls side, where All-American Annie Hill opened up a gap in the second mile (coming through in 11:16.22 to Tiahna Vladic's 11:20.10), but it all changed in the last mile as Hill struggled and slipped to 12th place while Vladic pulled with with the win in 17:04.63.

Nike Portland OR (200.0 ~ 14:50ish) = Timpanogos UT swept the team titles, with both individual duels living up to their billings as Joe Benson (Timpanogos UT) edged Tibebu Proctor (Northwest WA) 14:54.16 to 14:56.01 for the boys title and Jordan Oakes (Holy Names Academy WA) ran 17:27.40 to beat defending champ Ember Stratton (Sunset OR)'s 17:34.50.

Bob Firman ID (no report yet)

Roy Griak MN (no girls results yet): Early reports show Mountain View ID running very well, highlighted by freshman standout Lexy Halladay coming away with the win in 18:36 on the slow & muddy course. Mountain View's #2 was also among the top five early on, though no updates have been posted beyond that yet. Girls Top-10 results show that Halladay won by 19 seconds over North Dakota state champ Karly Ackley, though it looks like MV's #2 slipped out of the top 10 after running up front early on. Notable, however, is that Halladay's margin of victory came entirely in the last 2k: great, seasoned racing from the youngster! Wayzata MN have been announced as the boys team champion with 91 points, though Mountain View finished a strong tenth with 379 points and challenging several Heartland Top 15-25 type squads along the way. Charles Paul led the Mavericks with his 10th place finish (16:51.29), my early guess is that that will end up somewhere near a 175 or 176 rating. The big question going into this meet was how Mountain View would fare against Minnesota power and US Top 5-10 squad Edina (too bad Willmar MN didn't also run at this meet, as another Top 10 team would have been even more intriguing!) and also typical Midwest power Naperville North IL and one of the better California teams in Claremont. Team standings show that Mountain View finished second place finish. If Naperville North secures the Midwest's #2 spot at NXN-MW (they are ranked MW#3 by Dyestat at the moment), Claremont claims the California #2 or #3 spot, ad Mountain View ends up third in the Northwest (although as neither Summit or Sunset have looked all that strong, MV is probably the #2 team right now), that could mean very good things for the NW girls At-Large chances.

Bellevue WA (no varsity results posted yet)

(also, a note for you national followers who are also paying attention to Milesplit's tweets... disregard their comments re: The Woodlands results at Rim Rock, as that is actually The Woodlands College Park - another strong Texas squad, but not the US Top-5/10 program that won the Brenham Hillacious meet again this year, sweeping the top four places and putting six guys in the top 8)

EDIT3: Roy Griak boys results posted, reflected in the summary but no ratings estimates yet... boys, if 200.0 ~ 15:35 as expected, should be around a 158 average.

EDIT4: Griak girls team results are out, MV's team average should be around 116 with same qualification as the boys above.

EDIT5: A quick weather comparison with previous years to put the Griak results in perspective....

The last year to have similar weather leading up to Griak was 2010, when 2.42 inches of rain fell in the week leading up to the race (mostly on Thursday, with about a third of an inch on Tuesday and Wednesday) and temperatures were in the mid/high 50s with very little wind during the races. This year, there was 3.60 inches of rain that fell during the week (mostly on Wednesday, with about half an inch on Thursday and a third on Friday) with temperatures in the mid/high 60s with a fair amount of win (10-15 mph w/ gusts around 20). The temperature isn't a big deal (IMO anything under 70 is absolutely fine for racing, though that's not an opinion I've ever tried to defend with scientific proof), though the rain and wind probably made this year a bit slower (by how much, I don't know). Notable results from 2010:

Allie Woodward WI won the girls race in 18:22.3, with Olivia Anderson (Cherry Creek CO) and Shelby Houlihan (Sioux City East IA) the only others under 19 at 18:34.5 and 18:37.2. Woodward went on to finish sixth at the Footlocker National championships that year as well as 14th at Nike Cross Nationals, while Shelby Houlihan was 28th at NXN and Olivia Anderson was 6th in the ever-tough Colorado 5A State race. The top three teams were Dowling Catholic IA (NXN Nationals #17 and NXN Heartland Runner-up) with a 19:56.7 average, Cherry Creek CO (didn't run NXR, though IIRC I had them ranked in the US Top 50) with a 19:50.3 average, and Mountain View ID (NXN Northwest #4) with a 19:57.8 average. This year's top squads averaged 19:49.3 (Edina MN), 19:58.1 (Mountain View ID), 20:05.0 (Naperville North IL), and 20:15.1 (Claremont CA). Heartland #7 Returner Karley Ackley (who ran 10:32 at state this spring) was the only other runner under 19 at 18:57.1.

On the 2010 guys side, Adam Zutz MN won the boys race in 15:52.7 in a close race with Sam Hacker WI (15:53.8), but they had plenty of competition just behind them with Conor Wells IA (15:56.2), Devon Young MO (15:57.3), Marshall Moyer IA (15:59.4), Lukas Gemar MN (16:02.2), Tanner Ahrendt SD (16:06.6), Jake Leingang ND (16:07.4), Josh Thorson MN (16:09.0), and Steve Dado MN (16:09.8) rounding out the top 10. Several of those runners would run in post season meets: Thorston led Wayzata at NXN with his 52nd place finish, Zutz was the second NXN Heartland individual and 23rd at nationals, Moyer was 43rd at NXN, and Leingang was 64th. Madison West WI  (NXN Heartland #6) won the team race that year and averaged 16:39.0, with NXN qualifier Edina MN (NXN Nationals #18) second at 16:51.9, Shawnee Mission Northwest KS (NXN Heartland #3) at 16:49.9, Marquette University WI at 16:53.3, and Wayzata MN (NXN Heartland Champions and NXN Nationals #9) at 16:54.1, and Rosemount MN (NXN Heartland #5) at 17:00.2. This year, Seth Hirsch NE (#9 at both NXN and FLN last year; #4 returner from NXN and top returner from FLN) won the race in 15:44.8 with Patrick Bose IA (16:17.52), Seth Eliason MN (16:22.44), and Khalid Hussein MN (16:22.67) running under 16:30. Bose ran 9:19.29 this spring and Khalid Hussein ran 9:10.97 this spring, and Eliason was 16th at NXN Heartland last fall. This year's top three teams were Wayzata MN (17:04.08), Claremont CA (17:13.71), and Millard West NE (17:13.97)

Woodbridge Classic CA - Sep. 17

initial Ratings Estimate: 200.0 ~ 13:40.03

Individual Summary: The top individuals were a little more spread out in the girls fields than in the boys, as Arizona standout Alli Schadler (Rio Rico) ran away with the individual title in the Rated section in 16:26.3, but the big showdown was the Sweepstakes field where Grandview CO Brie Oakley scored her second MAJOR win in as many weeks as she ran 15:53.6. It is worth noting that this meet was ran on a new course, so course records don't really come into play, however all the previous versions of Woodbridge was also ran on very fast/flat 3 mile courses so some semblance of meaning could be taken from the times ran. The top times in meet history include races from some of the better runners around: Sarah Andrews from Woodlands TX ran 16:01 in 2009 and 16:17 in 2008; Christine Babcock from Woodbridge CA ran 16:05 in 2007; Sarah Baxter of Simi Valley CA ran 15:57 in 2013 and 16:12 in 2012; Destiny Collins of Great Oak CA ran 16:04 in 2014. Fresh off her new course record at Liberty Bell CO, Brie Oakley now set the meet record at Woodbridge by beating Sarah Baxter's 2013 mark of 15:57! Also of note for individuals, Malibu CA sophomore Claudia Lane ran 16:16.7 for the second fastest time of the day (and joins Oakley in the Top-10 All-Time Woodbridge meet history lists) while Texan senior Julia Heymach of Houston Lamar ran 16:29.1 to edge Walnut CA's Chloe Arriaga (16:33.4) for third.

Team Summary: Desert Vista AZ won the meet with 49 points over Great Oak CA (65), Southlake Carroll TX (133), and Mountain Vista CO (137). It seems very likely that those top three (or possibly four?) teams will meet again on the Glendoveer Golf Course this December.

Woodbridge Classic CA - Sep. 17

initial Ratings Estimate: 200.0 ~ 13:40.03

Team Summary: The premier national meet of the weekend did not fail to disappoint as there were many excellent performances. Woodbridge is a massive meet: 153 schools competed from 8 different states spread across the US: California, Arizona, Nevada, Utah and Colorado in the Southwest; Texas and Louisiana in the South; Missouri in the Midwest. In the boys race, it was pretty much a California/Southwest affair as Colorado powers Mountain Vista (99) and Palmer Ridge (111) secured the top two places in the premier Sweepstakes field with Great Oak CA (151), Desert Vista AZ (214), West Ranch CA (215) rounding out the top five. Texas powerhouse Southlake Carroll was sixth with 247 points, edging out Utah's Desert Hills (253) and a trio of California teams in Beaumont (265), Brea Olinda (266) and Yucaipa (272).

Individual Summary: The course was as flat and fast as always with two runners breaking 14 minutes on the 3 mile course. Luis Grijalva (Armijo CA) ran 13:58.0 for the win over St. Joseph Notre Dame CA's Cooper Teare (13:59.6). Southlake Carroll's Reed Brown finished third in 14:11.7, with Desert Hills senior Jaiden Melendrez taking fourth in 14:13.0. In total, 58 boys spread out over three races broke the 15:00 barrier at the meet.
