NXN Boys Projections

So, if you hadn't noticed, I didn't end up posting the All-Time individual performance lists from the regionals after the first week. The Southwest was already probably not going to happen, because it was only the second year at the course, but the South being so muddy prevented me from doing that region either. I may at some point go back and review it for the races during the last weekend, but for now I'm just going to skip it since we would be missing a quarter of the regions anyways.

Instead, here is a post about how the NXN Nationals fields might be looking. Normally, these projections include many races for all the teams (most importantly NXR and each of their State meets, but also including some small weighting for season bests from invitationals if applicable), however as I haven't had time to do that for many teams this year this is almost strictly based on NXR (with a pair of slight exceptions on both sides as noted below).

Boys Teams:

120 Great Oak CA
191 Dana Hills CA
214 The Woodlands TX
226 Hopkins MN
247 Sandburg IL
262 American Fork UT
267 Timpanogos UT
272 Lone Peak UT
275 Mountain Vista CO
276 Liverpool NY
281 Fayetteville-Manlius NY
285 Downingtown West PA
288 Southlake Carroll TX
296 Edina MN
301 Wayzata MN
301 Neuqua Valley IL
301 Lyons Township IL
337 Bozeman MT
344 Summit OR
380 Christian Brothers NJ
393 Marietta GA
420 Trinity Prep FL

Notes:

It is worth noting that the South ratings are a wild guess, so I could very well be way off. Also, I took into account additional factors for two boys and two girls teams:

For the Fayetteville-Manlius NY boys, I added in Peter Ryan with a wild guess that he could run with their #3 from their regional race (he was their #1 all year, and his coach seems to have tried to be careful with him over the last few weeks, so without having any real good idea of the situation this seemed like an okay guess). I have no idea if he is even going to run, let alone run well, so he could still change things quite a bit (this puts him as the #88 scorer in the field, with their #1 at 19 and #6 at 128).

For the Christian Brothers NJ boys, I know that my scores for them are quite a bit different than others seem to have them at, so just like I did with the Davis girls I also averaged in their state meet (MOC) races to see how that changed things. Surprisingly, just like with the Davis girls, it didn't push the needle hardly at all.

Top Individuals (194+ ratings):

NXN Girls Projections

So, if you hadn't noticed, I didn't end up posting the All-Time individual performance lists from the regionals after the first week. Girls Teams:

61 Fayetteville-Manlius NY
146 Great Oak CA
192 Pennsbury PA
199 Saratoga Springs NY
258 American Fork UT
271 Davis CA
278 Carmel IN
282 Willmar MN
284 Edina MN
285 Sunset OR
306 Lake Braddock VA
307 Naperville North IL
311 Bozeman MT
326 North Rockland NY
329 Northville MI
329 Kingwood TX
344 Centerville OH
352 Southlake Carroll TX
382 Blacksburg VA
385 La Salle Academy RI
397 Davis UT
441 Xavier Prep AZ

Notes:

It is worth noting that the South ratings are a wild guess, so I could very well be way off. Also, I took into account additional factors for two boys and two girls teams:

For the Sunset OR girls, I thought it would be a safe bet that their usual #4 Kelly Makin would be a little closer to where she was mid-season, as she her injury is now 2 months behind her and hopefully she has been healthy enough to start getting back into it. She wasn't placed where she was mid-season, but MUCH closer to where their #4 was at the regional meet (I placed her at 19:37.6 for NXN-Northwest).

For the Davis UT girls, I thought they ran decently far behind where they were at previous races, and since I have a somewhat decent idea of how their state meet course runs, I took a weighted average of those two performances (weighted 3x towards NXR, 2x towards state). Surprisingly, it ended up not making much difference at all.

Davis CA #1, Fiona O'Keeffe, has been injured for a while now. She barely made it through the state meet in once piece. I'm going to take a wild guess that she isn't running at NXN, and the scores above reflect that. Were she to run what she did at state, Davis would be about 15 points behind Great Oak at #3.

Nov. 14 Weekend Review

Using the adjustments posted on the All-Time Regional posts, it might be interesting to see how the competition is stacking up.

Here are the Top 10 Individuals, and a note on the teams.

Top Ten Boys Individuals:

15:06.0 - Jaret Carpenter - Wayzata MN
15:07.9 - Brody Smith - Cody WY
15:09.8 - Jonathan Davis - Oakwood IL
15:10.2 - Micah Mather - Highland Park MN
15:11.3 - Benjamin Veatch - Carmel IN
15:12.5 - Seth Hirsch - Millard West NE
15:13.1 - Jack Yearian - Bellarmine Prep WA
15:16.4 - Andy Monroe - Crater OR
15:18.5 - Isaac Harding - Rockford MI
15:18.7 - Jack Aho - Grayslake Central IL

Top Ten Girls Individuals:

17:09.5 - Judy Pendergast - Naperville North IL
17:12.0 - Annie Hill - Glacier MT
17:12.8 - Stephanie Jenks - Unattached IA
17:14.8 - Christina Aragon - Billings Senior MT
17:23.7 - Cailie Logue - Girard KS
17:23.9 - Ella Donaghu - Grant OR
17:28.9 - Grace Ping - Cotter MN
17:29.3 - Bethany Hasz - Jefferson - Alexandria MN
17:29.3 - Emma Benner - Forest Lake MN
17:34.1 - Tiahna Vladic - Billings Senior MT

Boys Team Notes:

Hopkins MN looked very strong, clearly the best of last weekend. I know Sandburg is highly ranked, but I haven't looked to see if it was an off race for them or if Hopkins is simply better.

The Northwest #3 and #4 teams, unfortunately, look like the weakest of the Top 4 finishers. Wayzata MN looked a bit stronger than Lyons Township, but but looked solid and are probably going to be in the conversation for an At-Large bid (I would think).

Girls Team Notes:

None of the teams really separated themselves at the top. In fact, in a smaller field, the fourth place team from the Midwest (Carmel IN) looks like the best of the bunch (scoring the 12 teams against eachother, they come out on top over Willmar MN 129-137 with Edina next with 138)... but that's the way it goes sometimes. Pretty much all the teams are bunched together, aside from HL#4 Wayzata and NW#4 Jesuit. HL#3 St. Thomas Aquinas is probably not sitting in very good position, not because they aren't good enough (they are among that bunch), but because the scoring at their regional just had them so far behind. Kind of like some of the Southwest boys teams a few years ago. It's going to be interesting to see who comes out with the At-Large bids on the girls side, though I'm guessing that the #3 teams from NY and SW will get in ahead of any of these teams.

NXN Midwest Individuals History

Continuing our look at the Fastest Regional Times:

Top 20 Times in NXN Midwest Regional History.

I'll be doing this for almost every regional this year (because I haven't been doing ratings all year long for the entire nation, and this gives an idea of how the regional courses compare - and it is good info to put out there). The only ones I might not be doing it for are regionals that haven't been mostly the same course over the last nine years, although maybe I will (we will see).

I will also include a quick note about how these Top 20 athletes have done at NXN compard to a set standard for cross-region comparison (the #11 scoring runner at NXN - picked because I figured the median #1 runner on teams is more or less going to be fairly consistent, and because I needed something quick and easy to calcuate for). This will give an example of how the courses generally compare to eachother (in good weather years) beyond my ratings system or Meylan's speed ratings over at Tullyrunners.com. Consider the comparisons ROUGH, but good enough to give an idea of the differences.

NXN-NW Girls Ratings

An interesting day last Saturday in Boise at the NXN Northwest Regional.

As I said on here before, I thought my rankings were underrating the Montana State meet... but I didn't think it was nearly that drastic. Great racing by the Montanans!

The girls team battle was looking to be pretty close between the top six teams. Would it be the undefeated (against NW teams) Bozeman MT squad, the reigning champions from Camas WA, the Sunset OR team led by a fantastic freshman, the Jesuit OR squad led by a trio of freshmen, the Billings Senior MT squad led by an incredible duo, or Summit OR? Unlike the guys side, it turned out those teams remained the top, although they were joined by a Mountain View ID squad the rebounded well from a disappointing third at their state meet. In the end, Bozeman MT came away with their second NXN Northwest title in three years while Sunset OR hung on for second despite their usual #4 still seemingly recovering from a concussion a month ago.

Annie Hill of Montana spread the field out early on as she raced away with it from the start. As it ended up, three Montana standouts ended up in the top four with Oregon's Ella Donaghu the only one able to break them up. Interestingly, the fifth place finisher is a runner who has decided to go the club route rather than compete for her high school (something that a few other athletes on her Whatcom Tesseract club does as well). For those who weren't sure who she was, Kristen Garcia was the Washington 2A Runner-up finisher last year for Sedro-Woolley, and I had no idea what she was up to since. Apparently, she has been racing quite well in Open races, including a fifth place finish in the Open 6k division at the PNTF Championships on November 1 against quite a few relatively recent College graduates and Club NW mainstays who are all very talented.

Anyways, on to the ratings:

(Estimate = 200.0 ~ 15:18.7)

NXN-NW Boys Ratings

An interesting day last Saturday in Boise at the NXN Northwest Regional.

As I said on here before, I thought my rankings were underrating the Montana State meet... but I didn't think it was nearly that drastic. Great racing by the Montanans!

Several of the top projected teams didn't necessarily fare so well. Crater's #1 ended up as their #4 but their #2 had a HUGE day to finish third overall, North Central's strong #2 at state was a bit further back as their #3, Tahoma's team was sick and their top athletes struggled... but Summit OR and Bozeman MT came out as the top two teams in the region even if they weren't perfect either.

The highlight for me (watching the race) was the showdown with Brody Smith and Jack Yearian, as both went after it and put on a great show. And I just have to say again, huge day for Andy Monroe from Crater - going from third place in Oregon 5A and consistently #2 on his team to third place in the entire Northwest. Awesome!

Washington State Meet Girls Ratings

Here are my preliminary ratings for the Washington State meet!

The big question: can Camas come out on top next week and return to NXN Nationals for a chance at a Top 10 finish? Those Oregon teams (and Bozeman, and perhaps other Idaho/Montana teams) are not going to be easy to beat. Could be a competitive regional!

Northwest Girls Rankings - Pre WA State

Here's a preliminary look at a Northwest Top 25 girls rankings going into the final State Meet weekend in the region. A note, I didn't include Wyoming teams yet (I haven't rated all of the major races in the state, including the state meet), though I will make a very quick assessment for the Lone Star teams at the bottom of the post

Top 25 Girls Teams:

 1. Sunset OR - Oregon 6A State Champion
 2. Jesuit OR - Oregon 6A State Runner-up
 3. Summit OR - Oregon 5A State Champion
 4. Camas WA - Washington 4A Southwest Regional Champion
 5. Sheldon OR - Oregon 6A State third place
 6. Bozeman MT - Montana 2A State Champion
 7. Eagle ID - Idaho 5A State Champion
 8. Billings Senior MT - Montana 2A State Runner-up
 9. Sentinel MT - Montana 2A State third place
10. Meridian ID - Idaho 5A State Runner-up
11. Mountain View ID - Idaho 5A State third place
12. Hellgate MT - Montana 2A State fourth place
13. Mount Si WA - Washington 4A Northwest Regional Champion
14. Mountain View OR - Oregon 5A State Runner-up
15. Grant OR - Oregon 6A State fourth place
16. Century ID - Idaho 4A State Champion
17. Ballard WA - Washington 3A District II Champion
18. Bellevue WA - Washington 3A District II Champion
19. Madison ID - Idaho 5A State fourth place
20. Eastlake WA - Washington 4A Northwest Regional Runner-up
21. Issaquah WA - Washington 4A Northwest Regional third place
22. Rocky Mountain ID - Idaho 5A State fifth place
23. Holy Names Academy WA - Washington 3A District II third place
24. Sandpoint ID - Idaho 4A State Runner-up
25. Lincoln OR - Oregon 6A State fifth place

Honorable Mention: Central Valley WA, Flathead MT, Garfield WA, Glacier Peak WA, Kamiak WA, Olympia WA, Skyline WA, Tualatin OR

For the Wyoming teams, I feel less sure about than the guys, but I'd guess that:
3A Champion Jackson Hole should probably be Top 20
4A Champion Cheyenne Central and Runner-up Campbell County should probably be Honorable Mention

And a final note: Washington teams are at a disadvantage in this comparison as they haven't run state yet (and with extra weight given to state meet results, the Washington teams are currently using their State Qualifying meets as that extra weighted race despite some athletes/teams seemingly not going all out), and could very well move up after this weekend.

Northwest Boys Rankings - Pre WA State

Here's a preliminary look at a Northwest Top 25 boys rankings going into the final State Meet weekend in the region. A note, I didn't include Wyoming teams yet (I haven't rated all of the major races in the state, including the state meet), though I will make a very quick assessment for the Lone Star teams at the bottom of the post. Montana State Meet ratings

Here are my preliminary ratings for the Montana State meet! Put an emphasis on "prelminiary" for this one, as it feels like this is a little low, but as my process is a mathematical system based on previous resutls, this is just how the numbers came out. As a result, the Montana teams and individuals might be a little underrated in the coming Regional Preview than they deserve - my apologies.

Side notes:

I only looked at classifications 2A and above... the reasons being that there isn't as much competition at the B/1A level for the top athletes/teams, and because this was generated while I was researching the top teams in the NW, which would very very rarely include schools that are 1A or smaller (among the top 30 there are usually only 1-2 that are 2A sized in the entire NW)

Camas girls are looking STRONG! They definitely have progressed well since earlier this season

North Central boys look like the top team in the state, but only 1 under 16:00 for a 15:55 average...

Janke would be #13 All-Time for 5k at Sun Willows if he matches that estimate, while the wunderkind Taylor Roe would break the Freshman record

Reviewing the weekend and the national team picture

Quick notes about results from the past weekend:

If there was any doubt that might have been lingering after the VVS Invitational results came out a few weeks ago, this weekend should have eliminated any question about who the #1 girls team in the nation is. Fayetteville-Manlius NY destroyed the field at the Manhattan Invitational, averaging 14:36.86 over the 4k course. "How good is that?" you might ask... well, that is an average of 2 seconds per runner faster than the 2004 Saratoga Springs NY squad (14:38.8 average) that some claim is the best team ever, and only 1.5 seconds slower than the 2009 Fayetteville-Manlius NY girls (14:35.44). Manhattan is a race that is extremely well tested, with all but one NTN/NXN Champion team having run on the course and many other NTN/NXN qualifiers to test it as well. Only seven other teams have averaged under 14:50 per runner on the course, and every single one of them won the NTN/NXN title that year.

The #2 girls team in the nation, Great Oak CA, also ran well last weekend as they scored 34 points to beat Arcadia CA (100) and Southlake Carroll TX (132) among others at the Clovis Invitational. Their time at the meet stacks up well, putting them at #5 on the All-Time Woodward Park list and only about half a minute (total team time, not team average) behind where they were when they set the course record at this meet last year.

The question still remains: who is the third best girls team in the nation? We've seen a very strong duo up front, but what about the rest of the nation?

Sunset OR still seems to be somewhere up there, having lost only to Great Oak CA while beating multiple US Top-25 caliber teams at Woodbridge and Nike Pre-Nationals already this year. They scorched the course at an always-fast (and probably short?) 5k at the Sandelie Golf Course, but is notable that they averaged within a minute of one of the best individual athletes in the nation in Ella Donaghu (17:55.0 vs. 16:59.6) and their #5 keeping within 80.4 seconds of a runner of that caliber is very impressive (for example, 80 seconds behind the #10 finisher at last year's NXN race, Ella Donaghu, was the 41st team scorer). I'm not sure they are US#3, but they definitely seem to be in the running for US Top-5.

The picture on the guys side is a bit more wide open, as many of the top teams haven't really faced off against eachother yet. What we do know is that:

-Sandburg IL is tearing it up in Illinois
-Lafayette MO is tearing it up in Missouri/Arkansas/Tennessee
-American Fork UT hasn't been healthy enough to continue their annual course record setting efforts in Utah
-Timpanogos UT came out on top of the biggest meet of the season to date, the Bob Firman Invitational, over Great Oak CA and several of the best from California and the Northwest
-Hopkins MN looks like the top team in the Heartland
-St. Ignatius OH has looked mighty impressive in Ohio
-and Downingtown West PA might be the best team in the Northeast after their win at Manhattan, though don't look like a potential US Top 5 team quite yet

What that all means, I have no idea.

Quick/Rough NW Team Rankings

Here's a quick take on what the Northwest Team rankings might be. This is not nearly as in-depth as my usual rankings, so it's just a quick look at (essentially) the best team performances from each team over the last few weeks. Also included is the results for each team from the last three weeks.

I expect these rankings would be different after results from the next couple week are tallied, but it seems that Washington is off to a slow start compared to the rest of the region (which is fine, as what happens in November is the real test for teams of this caliber).
